Fruits of the Spirit in the Bible
The King James Version of the Holy Bible lists the fruits of the Holy Spirit in Galatians 5: 22-23 as peace, love, joy, long-suffering (patience), goodness, gentleness, faith, meekness, and tolerance.
What does God mean by the Fruit of the Spirit?
According to the fifth chapter of the Epistle to the Galatians, the fruit of the Spirit is a biblical term to describe the gifts of Holy Spirit. It is how we are to treat each other and live in accordance to the scriptures.
According to the New International Version (NIV), there are nine fruits of the Holy spirit:
- Love
- Joy
- Peace
- Forbearance
- Kindness
- Goodness
- Faithfulness
- Gentleness
- Self-control
All the fruit of the Holy Spirit have been mentioned in different verses of the Bible as quoted below.
1. Love
In the Gospel of Mark, Jesus explains the two most important commandments of God.
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:30-31
First commandment is to love God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength. The second is to love each other.
By showing others how to love like Jesus, we are setting good examples as Christ followers.
You might have heard the phrase ‘Seeing is Believing’. When people see the love and kindness is us, they will tend to draw closer to God.
2. Joy
According to the Bible, joy refers to a deep kind of happiness that comes from God.
Joy is more long-lasting than normal happiness, which is usually only based on emotions and goes away easily. It is when you rejoice even in the midst of a storm. An unshakeable feeling that can only be experience when reading and understanding the true nature of God – that is found in the bible.
The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him. Psalm 28:7
3. Peace
According to the Holy Scriptures, peace refers to calm, tranquillity, rest, and quiet when you have faith in God.
He is our ultimate source of peace and comfort. Knowing that God is with us, can bring upon the perfect peace of mind and soul.
You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. Isaiah 26:3 (ESV)
4. Patience
Patience refers to the ability to persevere through trials and times of hardship without despair.
The Bible encourages us to maintain a hopeful and positive attitude while going through tough times, and trusting that God will see us through to the better times ahead.
It also encourages us to be slow to anger and always spread kindness.
Some verses that encourage patience are:
He will render to each one according to his works: to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. Romans 2:6-7 (ESV)
5. Kindness
Kindness refers to the act of doing good deeds for people in spite of what they do to us.
It encourages us to be good towards people even when they are doing the most to test our patience, without expecting any goodness in return.
Whoever pursues righteousness and kindness will find life, righteousness, and honor. Proverbs 21:21 (ESV)
6. Goodness
According to the Bible, goodness refers to the quality of being virtuous or having good morals.
It is an extension of generosity and kindness, even to people that do not deserve it.
Blessed is the one you choose and bring near, to dwell in your courts! We shall be satisfied with the goodness of your house, the holiness of your temple! Psalm 65:4 (ESV)
7. Faithfulness
A faithful person is one who is trustworthy in different areas of life, such as in business, implementing commands, and doing their assigned duties.
Such a person is just and exhibits reliability at all times.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Matthew 5:6 (NIV)
8. Humility (gentleness)
Humility, commonly referred to as meekness, is the virtue of being balanced in spirit and being able to control your power.
Gentleness is not a sign of being weak; rather than being strong but being able to use your strength wisely. If you have this fruit, you are able to pardon injuries and correct wrongs.
Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. James 4:10
9. Self-control
Self-control refers to the virtue of being able to be in control of your thoughts and your actions.
If you possess this invaluable trait, you are assertive, and people, temptations, or situations cannot easily sway you into making the wrong decisions.
In whatever situation you find yourself in, you are able to contain your natural human desires to do things that offer temporary pleasure, and you make assertive decisions without getting caught up in the situation.
Better a patient person than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city. Proverbs 16:32
