1 Peter talks about how we as God’s children are called to be holy and reflect the righteousness of Christ. In that, even in His suffering, just as Jesus came out victorious, being seated at the right hand of the Father, we too are made righteous through faith in Christ.
*Note: Bible verses below are taken from the ESV translation.
This book of Peter talks about putting off our old selves and walking in ways that are pleasing to God – in obedience to the truth.
How will you know this truth?
So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32

1 Peter 1
Born Again
Peter opens this letter acknowledging the Holy Trinity – the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
In verses 3-4, Peter describes what it means to be born again. It means to be born again to a new hope through Christ that Heaven is waiting for us. The word “born again” was first explained by Jesus to Nicodemus in John 3.
Peter Comforts (verses 6-7) – Peter also explains that living a life in Christ may be subject to trials that may be disheartening. But this is what tests if our faith is genuine.

➡ Bible study on testing of faith : James 1:2-3
Verse 8 explains true faith:
- Even though we haven’t seen Jesus we love Him
- Even though we haven’t seen Jesus we believe in Him
Result of our faith in Him ➡ salvation of our souls (verse 9).
A Unique Calling
Verse 14 reminds us to forget our former selves when we were following worldly passions (Titus 2:12; James 4:1). But now as a new creation in Christ, we are to be Holy in our attitude.
Additional Bible study on being a new creation in Jesus ➡ 2 Corinthians 5:17
Jesus existed even before all creation ➡ 1 Peter 1:20. Also mentioned in Hebrews 1:2, Colossians 1:16, John 1:1-3.
1 Peter 2
God’s People
Before we begin this Chapter, let us do a bible study on the following verses that describe who are called as the children of God.
- John 1:12 (children of God)
- Romans 8:17 (Heirs of God)
- Romans 9:8 (children of the promise)
- Philippians 2:15 (blameless and innocent)
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. 1 Peter 2:9
Peter makes an important point in verse 11, that is still applicable today:
It is the passions of our flesh that war against our soul.
Submission
From verses 13-17, it talks about how we look at Christ and follow Him as an example (verse 21). Why?
For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. 1 Peter 2:15
He even goes to the extent of saying that a servant must respect to their masters whether they are just or unjust (verse 18).
These two teachings follows along the lines of Jesus’ teaching in Matthew:
- Matthew 5:15-16
- Matthew 5:44-46
Jesus committed no sin ➡ yet was judged unjustly ➡ by His wounds we are healed (Isaiah 53:5).
1 Peter 3
Good Wives and Husbands
The New Testament has a number of books that talk about the character of a husband and wife.
➡ Bible study on marriage: Ephesians 5:22, Ephesians 5:25-28, Colossians 3:18-19.
➡ Jesus taught on marriage and divorce: Matthew 10:2-9
In the Gospels, Jesus often teaches about being an example that reflects God’s nature, so others may follow. This same principle is explained in verses 1-2.
What is and is not considered as beauty?
The famous verses in Proverbs 31, describes a woman who fears the Lord, and verse 30 explains that it is not charm or beauty, but the fear of the Lord that pleases Him.
Fear of the Lord ➡ Exodus 20:20, Proverbs 1:7
Coming back to the book of 1 Peter 3, verse 4 shows us that the beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit is what is pleasing to the Lord.
Hurdles in Being Good
The book of 1 Peter acknowledges it’s not easy to do good and not face backlash. But he reminds us to remain humble in all this.
Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing. 1 Peter 3:9

1 Peter 4
The Trials on Earth
Chapter 4 opens up with the explanation on the joy in suffering for Christ’s sake. A distintion is made between human desires and the will of God.
Verse 11:
➡ Speak as one who speaks of God
➡ Serve as one who serves in the strength of God
If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. 1 Peter 4:14
1 Peter 5

How to lead ➡ verse 2
Why to lead ➡ verse 3
The reward ➡ verse 4
Caution ➡ verse 8
How to stand firm ➡ verse 9
