Just like the disciples, John and Peter, Jude also highlights the problems with false teachings – verse 4.
In certain translations like the ESV and the NLT, the word “Lord” is described in verse 5 as Jesus Christ. And if this is the case, then this verse explains to us that is Jesus who brought the people out of the land of Egypt, through signs and wonders.
Here is a beginner friendly in-depth bible study and free printable of Jesus in the Old Testament.
False Ideologies
Now coming back to false teachings, this book recaps three types of rebellion in the Old Testament:
- The Israelites who God saved from the Egyptians, still, did not believe in God – verse 5
- The fallen angels who left their dwelling place, ended up being kept in eternal chains until judgement day – verse 6
- Reason behind why Sodom and Gomorrah was destroyed – verse 7
The entire story of Sodom and Gomorrah can be found in Genesis 19.
Verses 8-10 talk about deception leading to destruction. When people are misled by false teachings they lose a sense of understanding.
Hosea 4:6 says, My people are destroyed for the lack of knowledge.
The only way we can gain knowledge and understanding is from the knowledge Provider – God – who by the Holy Spirit has led the true prophets to give us the word of God – the Bible. That is why we rely on the Bible to understand how we are to live and follow God.
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness. 2 Timothy 3:16
Verse 11 goes on to describe people that were misled by their own false thinking:
- Cain – Study Genesis 4
- Balaam – Study Numbers 22
- Korah – Study Numbers 16
The Lord pronounces judgement on the ungodly – verses 14-16
Those who follow ways that are not pleasing to the Lord, are the ones who cause division amongst people – verses 17-19
Closing statements:
Remain in God’s presence and in His love – verse 21
There are two types of people who are not yet believers:
- Those who doubt
- Those who rebel
Those who rebel ➡ So far we have seen verses about those who cause rebellion and lead people astray.
Those who doubt ➡ In verse 22, the bible teaches us to have mercy on those who doubt, and to save them into eternal life.
It is in God’s nature to bring everyone to Himself, and He can work with those who doubt by having mercy on them and by saving them through the blood of Jesus.
