What is the Book of Matthew About?

The Gospel of Matthew begins with the birth of Jesus, who was to be called Immanuel – God with us.

“The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”). Matthew 1:23

When Jesus came to live among the people, His name was called God is with us. And this statement carries along throughout the Book, ending with the last verse which says:

And teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Matthew 28:20

Although Jesus is God, He emptied Himself by being born in the likeness of men (Philippians 2:6), and gave Himself up as sacrifice, that through Him we may have everlasting life.
