Colossians Bible Study
This is a letter written by Paul the Apostle, to the people of Colossae.
Colossians First Chapter
1. Prayer
Paul starts this letter giving thanks to God for their faith, love and hope in Jesus Christ.
Then he writes a powerful prayer for wisdom, which is great for us to pray and meditate on.
Prayer for wisdom: Verses 9-14.
2. Christ – The Beginning
Genesis 1:1– In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
John 1:1– In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Colossians 1:16 connects both the above verses together, stating that Jesus is the Creator.
Verse 15 – Jesus is the firstborn of all creation
Verse 18- Jesus is the beginning, and the firstborn from the dead
3. What Did Jesus do for us?
Romans 3:23 tell us that all mankind are sinners.
Romans 6:23 show us that according to God’s standards the punishment of sin is death, but when we lay our hope in Christ – who took our punishment on the Cross – we are made into a new Creation in Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:17). So that now we can stand righteous before God.
And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him. Colossians 1:21-22
The Mystery
Verses 25-26- Paul’s mission was to make the word of God known to all. This Gospel message was kept a mystery and is now revealed.
The Mystery – Christ is in you ➡ hope of glory (verse 27)
Colossians Second Chapter
Understanding and Knowledge
God’s mystery ➡ Christ ➡ wisdom and knowledge (verse 2)
Do not be deceived – verse 3
Grow in Christ
Paul continues on to talk about staying focussed on God’s word and not be misled by false teachings.
See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. Colossians 2:8
Deity of Jesus – verse 9
True circumcision pleasing to God – verse 11-13 (Not a physical one, but a spiritual one)
The Crucifixion of Christ was a Victory
Christ paid for our sins when He was nailed to the Cross, because He was the ransom for our punishment of sins (Revelation 1:5-6). And by His blood, believers are saved into eternal life.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16
Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood. Acts 20:28
This verse in Acts not only describes God’s plan to save us into His Kingdom, but also reveals the Holy Trinity in this one passage.
Man Made Religion
Here Paul describes that it is not man-made religion that pleases God.
Study verses 16-23, as they can free you of any religious and legalistic mindset that you may be holding on to.
Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. Colossians 2:16
All of this is a foreshadow of Christ (verse 17)
Here are statements made by Jesus regarding this topic:
- And the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness.” Luke 11:39
- For the Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath. Matthew 12:8
Instead Paul explains that we should hold on to the head ➡ Christ Jesus (verse 19)
➡ Bible study verses 21-23 ➡ man-made rituals that are of no use
Colossians Third Chapter
A New Creation
Since you are now a new creation in Christ focus on things of the Kingdom of Heaven, where we hold true citizenship (Philippians 3:20).
Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. Colossians 3:2
When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Colossians 3:4
Things that are detestable to God: Verses 5-9
All are one in Christ
- Verse11
- Galatians 3:28
How God Wants us to Be ➡ verses 12-15
Rules for Christian Families
Wives ➡ verse 18
Husbands ➡ verse 19
Children ➡ verse 20
Fathers ➡ verse 21
Workers ➡ verse 22
Masters ➡ Colossians 4:1
Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. Colossians 3:23-24
Colossians Fourth Chapter
These are the final words of Paul in this letter to the Colossians.
Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person. Colossians 4:5-6
