Like the Gospel of John, the book of First John, also covers four important topics. Jesus as God and eternal life (1 John 5:20), loving one another (1 John 4:7), the answer to sin (1 John 1:7) and overcoming the world (1 John 2:15).

1 John 1
The Word of God
Jesus is called the Word of God (Revelation 19:13, John 1-3).
This book opens with John describing Jesus as the One who they saw, heard and have touched Him with their own hands (verses 1-2).
God is Light
God is light (verse 5), so we are His children who walk in the light. This is why Jesus says in Matthew 5:16, let your light shine before others, and it is the blood of Jesus that cleanses us from all sin.
Romans 3:23 ➡ tells us that all have sinned. So verse 8 tell us that if we say we have no sin in us, we are deceiving ourselves.
2 Corinthians 5:21 ➡ Jesus was sinless. (also 1 John 3:5).
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23
To Summarize:
All mankind are sinners ➡ but Jesus never sinned ➡ so through His death and resurrection, those who believe in Jesus are saved.
Because Jesus took on the punishment instead of us.
1 John 2
Jesus our Redeemer
The hope that John has, is for us not to sin. But if we do sin, we have Jesus to turn to (verses 1-2).
If we say we know Jesus ➡ we are to keep His word (verse 4)
If we say we abide in Him ➡ we are to walk in the way He walked (verse 6) [Bible Study: Luke 9:23].
What is True Light?
Whoever says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness. Whoever loves his brother abides in the light, and in him there is no cause for stumbling. 1 John 2:9-10
Do Not Be Deceived
From verses 15-27, two very important topics on deception are covered. One is the sinful desires of the world and false teaching – both are misleading.
Bible study on desires of the world: 1 John 2:15-17
Bible study on false doctrines: 1 John 2:18-19 and 1 John 2:22-23 (How to identify it)
Verse 27: The Holy Spirit is our Great Teacher
1 John 3
Children of God
Who are the children of God? ➡ Romans 9:8
Verse 3 explains that everyone who believes in Jesus are purified by Him.
Who was the first sinner? (Hint: Not Adam and Eve) – Answer in verse 8.
The next verse explains a key point. That though we are all sinners, once we believe in Christ and follow Him, we don’t make it a practice to sin, hence becoming the children of God (verse 10).
Importance of loving one another: Verses 11-13
Giving to those in need: Verse 17
An important commandment: Verse 23
1 John 4
False Prophets
The book of 2 Peter Chapter 2 contributes heavily to false prophets and teachers. Just like Apostle Peter, John also does not hesitate to make a mention of it in his book.
John’s Method on How to Test a False Prophet: Verses 1-3
Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. 1 John 4:4
Who lives in you: 1 Corinthians 3:16, 2 Timothy 1:14, John 14:17
Who lives in the world: Ephesians 2:2, 1 Peter 5:8
The Spirit of truth and the spirit of deception explained in verse 6.
A Loving God
Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 1 John 4:11
Source of love: 1 John 4:19
Not of fear: 1 John 4:18, 2 Timothy 1:7
1 John 5
Supremacy of Jesus
Here is a detailed post on the deity of Jesus that go into more detail using bible scriptures.
Another book that highlights the supreme authority of Jesus, is the First Chapter in the book of Hebrews.
The greatest testimony that we have of Jesus, is the Father Himself, who spoke from the Heavens and proclaimed Jesus as His only Son (during the Baptism and on the Mount of Transfiguration).
And behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” Matthew 3:17
If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater, for this is the testimony of God that he has borne concerning his Son. 1 John 5:9
John reinforces the importance of Jesus, through whom we receive our salvation.
God gave us His Son ➡ so we may have eternal life
Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. 1 John 5:12
Verses 13-19, continues to talk about salvation through Christ and how we are to continue to walk in His ways.
Did John Declare Jesus as God?
And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. Little children, keep yourselves from idols. 1 John 5:20-21
There is much debate surrounding this verse, with John’s last part of verse 20 – He is the true God and eternal life.
We know that Jesus is the source of eternal life, as mentioned in verse 11.
Eternal life Bible Study – John 6:54, Romans 6:23, John 3:16, John 14:6
But here, John also reveals the true God. The question is if John refers this to Jesus or the Father. It is no surprise if John does declare Jesus as God, because His opening statement in the book of John does affirm it.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:1
