2 Peter Chapter-by-Chapter Bible Study
2 Peter 1
Growing and Maturing in Faith
God’s promises in the bible help us stay focussed and not be led astray (verse 4).
The way Apostle Peter asks us to do this is by practising these qualities: (verses 5-7)
Faith ➡ virtue ➡ knowledge ➡ self-control ➡ steadfastness ➡ godliness ➡ brotherly affection ➡ love
These are what make us fruitful in the knowledge of Christ (verse 8).
Peter reminds them of Christ’s Majesty
In verse 16, he lets them know how real Christ and His teachings are. That even the voice of the Father was heard confirming His Son Jesus (verse 17).
He also reminds them that he will be leaving the world soon (verse 14) as foretold by Jesus (John 21:18).
True prophecy ➡ verses 20-21
2 Peter 2
This is one of the most important Chapters in the entire New Testament that speaks of morals and values that displease God.
1. False Prophets
This is the first on the list, as this is what can mislead people through false doctrine which don’t align with scripture. That is why it is important to read and understand the bible for ourselves to understand if what we hear in sermons are same as what the bible teaches.
2. Those who Sinned Against the Will of God
1. Angels who sinned were cast into darkness until the day of judgement. (verse 4)
2. During the time of Noah, all except seven (excluding Noah), were perished by the floods because of sin (verse 5)
3. Except for Lot, Sodom and Gomorrah were turned to ashes because of immorality (verse 6-7)
Lesson from this:
Then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment. 2 Peter 2:9
3. Story of a False Prophet
In the book of Numbers Chapter 22, there is a story of a false prophet called Balaam. Greed overtook this prophet and he was directly rebuked by God.
That is why 1 John tells us that we must test every teaching before we believe it.
Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. 1 John 4:1
The entire chapter talks in great length about the topic of false teachings and how this can lead people to into a life of sin (verse 18).
They promise freedom, but they themselves are slaves of sin and corruption. For you are a slave to whatever controls you. 2 Peter 2:19
4. Losing Salvation
A popular topic of discussion is, if someone can lose salvation. Salvation is explained in John 3:16 by Jesus Christ.
Salvation is for anyone who believes in Jesus, so that they are made righteous before God. But when we go back to being our former selves and are wilfully entangled in sin, verse 20 explains that we are worse off than before. Why? (answer: verses 21-22)
2 Peter 3
1. The Day of the Lord
The bible explains that ungodliness will be heightened in the Last days. (2 Timothy 3, Matthew 24:4-5, Matthew 24: 23-25).
Verse 4 says that many will even doubt the Second coming of the Lord.
From the beginning of the world to its end: Verses 5-7
One of the main reasons why the second coming of the Lord is questioned is because it has not yet happened.
But with the Lord one day = one thousand years (verse 8)
Just like Noah took years to build the ark. This was God giving the people time to repent before the flood came.
It is the grace of God that is giving people time to come to Jesus before the day of the Lord (verse 9-10).
And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him. 2 Peter 3:15
In this verse above, Peter not only explains the Lords patience, but also verifies the credibility of Paul’s teachings.
Hence we are to live holy and righteous before His arrival – when it will happen, nobody knows.
But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed. 2 Peter 3:10
The Purpose
Peter reminds us of something we often forget in verse 11- the new Heavens and the new Earth that is to come.
That our lives in this world are only temporary.
Philippians 3:20 tell us that our real citizenship is in Heaven
James 4:14 remind us that our life is just a vapour.
