Philippians 1
Spreading the Word
The letter begins with Paul’s thanksgiving prayer. He prays that they continue to grow in knowledge and continue to mature in Christ.
Fruit of salvation – righteousness through Christ – glorifies God (verse 11).
As a result of receiving Christ into our hearts, by the power of the Holy Spirit we display the fruits of the Spirit.
➡ Even in imprisonment, Paul is overjoyed that the Word of God is being preached (verses 12-14).
Some preach with good intentions and others with impure motives. Regardless, Paul is glad that the Gospel is preached. (verses 15-18)
Being Bold for Christ
For I fully expect and hope that I will never be ashamed, but that I will continue to be bold for Christ, as I have been in the past. And I trust that my life will bring honor to Christ, whether I live or die. Philippians 1:20 (NLT)
Paul says that to live is Christ and to die is gain.
➡ By living we live for Christ. (verse 22)
➡ By dying we live with Christ. (verse 23)
Our Real Citizenship
We are told to live in a manner worthy of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This understanding that we are citizens of Heaven is again mentioned later on in this book of Philippians 3:20, and also in Ephesians.
Ephesians 2:19 – So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God.
Philippians 2
Be Christ-Like
- Loving one another
- Working together
- Not being selfish
- Being humble
- Looking out for others
Because, though Jesus was God, He emptied Himself of His glory and humbled Himself to take the form of a man.
Below is an important bible verse that reminds us about the deity of Jesus.
Who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Philippians 2:6-8
As we continue to read two verses later we see the Majesty of Jesus.
So that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:10-11
Being Stewards for Christ
When we are obedient to God with reverence and fear, God works through us to do what please Him.

Philippians 3
Who are Truly Right with God?
Do we need to be circumcised to be saved? (Answer in verse 2).
Who are those that are truly circumcised? (Answer verse 3).
Paul goes on to describe his own life (verses 5-6) :
- Circumcised when he was eight days old
- An Hebrew from Israel
- From the tribe of Benjamin
- An obedient member of the Pharisees
- Zealous of the law
Yet he considers himself a failure before he knew Christ.
Made Righteous by Faith in Jesus
Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ and become one with him. I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ. For God’s way of making us right with himself depends on faith. Philippians 3:8-9 (NLT)
Stand Firm
Continue to walk in the way of the Lord, through an unwavering faith in Christ.
Grow as mature followers of Christ: Study Ephesians 4:13-15

Living for Christ ➡ verse 20-21
Philippians 4
The Lord is Coming Soon
Paul reminds us of the coming of the Lord, and that we are to refrain from disagreements and work along with each other. (verses 1-4)
Do Not Be Anxious
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. Philippians 4:6
And the best part is to receive peace from God;
And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7

God Provides
Verse 11-12, Paul teaches us that he has learnt how to sustain himself through little and through abundance. And He does it through Christ.
I can do all things through him who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13
It is through God that we share in His abundant provision.
And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19
