Book of James Summary (Chapter by Chapter)
In this James Bible study, we will look at the topics covered in each Chapter, along with Bible verses that are worth studying.
James Chapter 1
1. Our Faith is Tested During the Trials of Life
It is a biblical fact that God disciplines His children. Just like any earthly father who disciplines his kids to instil morals and values, Our Heavenly Father also disciplines us to bring us closer to His likeness.
The Nature of God:
Moses said to the people, “Do not fear, for God has come to test you, that the fear of him may be before you, that you may not sin.” Exodus 20:20
God often tests us so that we continue to fear Him, so we don’t end up in sin. It is the love of God that we walk in righteousness.
Bottom line is that, trials happen either as a result of God’s correction or a result of Him testing our faith. Both are good things, because God tests whom He loves (Proverbs 3:11-12).
➡ God tests us; God disciplines us.
Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. James 1:2-3
Steadfastness means to be unwavering.
Verse 4 and 5 goes on to state that steadfastness makes us perfect and without lack. But when we doubt we tend to be like the wave of the sea that is tossed around.
James 1:12 says, Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test of time he will receive the crown of life.
The next verse explains that God cannot be tempted and He does not tempt anyone.
Bible Verse to Memorize:
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. James 1:17
2. Listen and Obey
From verses 19-27, we read first the importance of listening and then the importance of doing.
The act of speaking and reacting needs to be slower in nature than hearing and doing.
Quick to hear ➡ slow to speak ➡ slow to anger.
We see the importance of getting rid of anger, which does not produce the righteousness of God in us.
Verse 21 talks about the another important topic – His powerful word. It is Gods word that save our souls.
Bible Verse to memorize:
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. James 1:22
James Chapter 2
1. Being Partial to Others
Verses 1-13, talks about showing no partiality to others as a believer in Christ. Whether a rich man comes to you, or a poor man comes to you, they are both to be treated equally.
But when we treat the rich man better than the poor man, we are dishonouring the poor man (verse 6).
Verse 9 tells us that if we show partiality, we are committing a sin.
Bible Verse to Memorize:
Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him? James 2:5
In the Gospels, Jesus tells us the story of the rich man and Lazarus, which can be read in Luke 16:19-31.
This story clearly explains how riches on earth are not what guarantee our entry into Heaven. According to the story narrated by Jesus, He tells us that after the death of them both, the rich man was in eternal torment, while the poor man finally received his share of happiness.
Our purpose in life is not how we start here on earth, but how we finish and be granted access into heaven.
2. Faith Without Works is Dead
This is a very important part of this book that says, faith without works is dead.
Three topics are important to be studied here:
- Faith
- Works
- Eternal life
Abraham had Faith and Works:
Abraham had faith in God and he was justified by his actions when he was ready to give up his son Isaac on the mountain. This is a powerful example of faith along with works mentioned in verses 21-22.
You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works James 2:22
Bible verse to Study:
Yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified. Galatians 2:16
So we see that we are not justified (made righteous) before God because of our good works, but by faith in Jesus. And once we receive Jesus into our hearts, the love of Christ flows out of us to perform good works.
Rahab Acted on Her Faith:
Similarly Rahab and her family were saved because of her actions in saving the messengers that came to her for help. Her actions were the result of her faith in the one true God.
The story of Rahab, the prostitute can be read in Joshua 2. She had heard of how God had safely brought the Israelites out of the land of Egypt and overcome those who tried to destroy them – by the Mighty hand of God. So Rahab had the fear of the Lord in her, which allowed her to act in faith.
When we have faith, it results in us doing good works.
Now coming to the last part, eternal life.
Eternal Life:
Eternal life on the other hand is not something we receive because of our good works/actions, beacuse it is a gift given to us by God.
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. Ephesians 2:8-9
By the grace of God, Jesus died on the Cross to erase our sins, and this is because of His compassion and not because of our good deeds.
➡ Jesus gives eternal life to all who believe in Him
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16
True Faith in Jesus ➡ naturally results in good works (Study Galatians 5:24)
Faith without works ➡ unfruitful
It’s only natural for any true believer in Christ, to automatically do good works. But good works without faith in Christ does not result in fruitfulness. Because Jesus said,
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. John 15:5
➡ Without Jesus we can do nothing
But, when we talk about the topic of eternal life, it can only be received through faith in Jesus, and not by good works alone.
Bible verse to Study:
For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead. James 2:26
To Summarize Chapter 2:
Jesus knowingly died for a purpose, so that we may enter into Heaven by believing in Him. Believing involves turning away from old habits and walking into our new life with Christ (Study 2 Corinthians 5:17). It is not the Law or our good works that bring salvation but it is only through Christ.
Here’s what Apostle Paul says,
I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose. Galatians 2:21
Believe by faith in Jesus  leads to eternal life
Jesus in us  results in good works
James Chapter 3
1. The Power of the Tongue to Destroy
Not everyone should become teachers ➡ why? (verse 1)
The Bible gives three examples of how powerful the tongue, a small member of our body can be:
- Verse 3 – We can guide horses by using a bridle
- Verse 4 – Guide a huge ship through a small rudder
- Verse 5 – Create a huge forest fire by a small spark
So also is the tongue.
Bible Study Verse:
And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell. James 3:6
Verse 8 goes on to say, every possible animal can be tamed by man, but no man can tame the tongue.
Why is the Tongue so Important?
With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. James 3:9
➡ With the tongue we bless and curse.
2. True and False Wisdom
The last part of the Chapter 3 of James talks about wisdom. It covers two types of wisdom.
Earthly wisdom includes jealously, selfish ambition and boastfulness. (verse 14)
Heavenly wisdom is pure, peaceful, joyful, impartial and sincere, resulting in good fruits. (verse 17)
James Chapter 4
1. Worldly Passions and Desires
The beginning of the verse explains that fights and quarrels stem from lack.
When we do not have we tend to resort to unlawful behaviour.
Bible Verse to Study:
You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. James 4:4
The verse before this verse is key to understanding this passage. In verse 3 it says,
You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. James 4:3
2. Pride and Boasting
Four very important topics are covered in this Chapter of James:
- God opposes the proud and gives grace to the humble (verse 6)
- Submit to God ➡ resist the devil ➡ he will flee (verse 7)
- There is only one Law Giver and Judge – so who are we to judge others? (verse 12)
- Do not boast about tomorrow, because no one knows what tomorrow will bring – leave the planning to God. (verses 13-16)
James Chapter 5
1. Wrongful Behaviour
Chapter 5 begins with harsh warning against the rich and wicked, that ends in verse 6.
It goes into detail to explain the unlawful behaviour of the rich storing up wealth for themselves, while the laborers don’t get what they deserve.
2. Being Patient through Suffering
The example given in verse 7 tells us that just as a farmer waits for his crops to yield fruit, so also we must endure trials and wait for the coming of the Lord.
Another example is the of Job.
Job remained faithful to God, even in the midst of calamity. Everything was falling apart in his life yet he chose to remain in the Lord and was blessed with twice as much (verse 11).
The Power of Prayer
[From verses 13-20]
If you are suffering ➡ pray
If you are happy ➡ praise
If you are sick ➡ let the elders anoint and pray over him
The power of prayer is finally explained by the story of prophet Elijah, who prayed fervently that it may not rain, and it did not rain for three and a half years.
