Chapter 1
The opening of John’s Gospel starts right-away with proclaiming the divinity of Jesus.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:1
It goes on to say that all things were made through Him, in Him was life, and that He was the true light in darkness. We can understand that the Word of God is Jesus as it is also mentioned in the last book of the Bible.
In Revelation 19:13, we see that Jesus is called the Word of God, who became flesh (John 1:14).
John 1:17 |
---|
Law was given to Moses |
Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ |
This is the only Gospel which talks about how Jesus calls the two disciples, Philip and Nathanael to join Him.
In Verses 47-51, we see how Nathanael recognises and accept Jesus as the Son of God.
Chapter 2
The beginning of this Chapter starts with a miracle at a wedding in Cana which Jesus and His mother attended. When they run out of wine, Jesus turns six jars of water into wine.
Again, the true nature of Jesus is revealed when He visits the temple at Jerusalem. Jesus is visibly unhappy with the nature of business conducted at the premises of the temple. The Jews then question Him about His authority and Jesus replies,
Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. John 2:19
The Temple He mentions in this verse is of His body (verse 21), which means Jesus has authority over His own body – to lay it down and to raise it up.
Chapter 3
The concept of being born again is explained to Nicodemus by Jesus.
What does it mean to be born again?
Verse 3 |
Verse 5-6 |
Jesus draws a parallel between the bronze serpent Moses created in Numbers 21:4-9, to Jesus on the Cross that was to come saying,
And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him may have eternal life. John 3:14-15
Here is a short background story of the bronze serpent in the Old Testament. When the people of Israel were bitten by serpents, Moses – under the instruction of God – created a bronze serpent and set in on a pole, so that if anyone were bitten by the serpent may look at the pole and live.
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

Jesus calls God His own Father, making the Jews very unhappy (verse 18).
Jesus continues to preach the good news of salvation through His word and that He has the power to execute judgement (Verse 27).
Truly, truly I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes Him who sent me, has eternal life. John 5:24
This is the second time He brings up Moses, where Jesus says that Moses wrote of Me.
If you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me. John 5:46
Chapter 6
Similar to the book of Matthew, Mark and Luke, the story of Jesus feeding the five thousand is mentioned here.
The Great I AM:
Also the story of Jesus walking on water is mentioned in verse 16-20. It is interesting to note that when the disciples were afraid seeing Jesus walking on water, Jesus replied Do not be afraid “I AM”, according to the Greek Interlinear bible. In the Old Testament, God calls Himself the I AM (Exodus 3:14).
Also in the previous story of the Samaritan woman by the well, Jesus reveals to her that He is the I AM (John 4:26), in the Greek interlinear.
Jesus also mentions the I AM statement in John 8:58.
The Bread of Life:
Yet again, Jesus brings up the story of manna(food) that God provided to Moses and the Israelites when they were in the wilderness.
Jesus said, I am the bread that came down from heaven. John 6:41
Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life, whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. John 6:35

I am the Light of the World:
When Jesus stated that He was the light of this world (John 8:12), the Pharisees question how He can bear witness about Himself. For this Jesus replies,
I am the one who bears witness about myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness about me. John 8:18

- I and the Father are one (Verse 30)

I Am the Resurrection and the Life:
Lazarus was the brother of Mary and Martha whom the Lord had previously visited. They sent word to Him that their brother Lazarus was ill. But Jesus said,

The following turn of events leads to Jesus being glorified.
- Jesus waits two days after hearing that Lazarus was ill
- Then He tells the disciples its time to go to Judea as Lazarus has died
- Four days after Lazarus is buried Jesus raises him from the dead
Jesus said, I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live. John 11:25
Moving on to Chapter 12, we see the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, riding on a donkey as was prophesised in the Old Testament.
The Voice of God is heard, thundering from heaven, in verse 28.

Chapters 15 and 16
Jesus says, I am the vine and you are the branches. This Chapter teaches us the importance of abiding in Gods Word. When we abide in Jesus He prunes us so we grow more abundantly. We did not choose Him, yet He chose us to go and bear fruit.
If you abide in me and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. John 15:7
The rest of Chapter 16 continues with explanations of the works of the Holy Spirit as a guide, who will glorify Jesus.
