Hebrews Chapter 1
1. The Authority and Supremacy of Jesus
Verse 2 ➡ Jesus is the Creator
Verse 3 ➡ Jesus radiates God’s glory – He sustains everything – Seated at the right hand of God.
Verses 5-7 ➡ Jesus is greater than the angels and they worship Him
What does God the Father say about His Son Jesus?
But to the Son He says: “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom.” Hebrews 1:8 (NKJV)
God the Father calls Jesus as God, right here in this verse. It’s verses like this that has initiated the concept of the Holy Trinity in the Bible – one God yet three distinct persons.
God continues to talk about Jesus as;
Verse 10 – The One who laid the foundations of heaven and earth
Verse 11 – Jesus is eternal
Verse 12 – Jesus never changes
Hebrews Chapter 2
1. Message of Salvation
While Chapter 1 shows us that Jesus is fully God, Chapter 2 shows us that He is also fully man.
Verse 3 is an introduction to why the message of salvation is important.
Jesus taught that He was the door to salvation ➡ the apostles and disciples taught the same ➡ God followed this up by miracles and wonders through the Holy Spirit.
2. Jesus was Fully Man
Jesus was fully a man, but only for a short time (verse 7).
Who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. Philippians 2:6-7
Verses 11-13, talk about the children of God through Christ.
➡ Study John 1:12 to see who are called as children of God.
3. Why did Jesus have to Die?
Note: We know that the punishment of sin is death (Romans 8:23), and that all of us are sinners (Romans 3:23).
Now here comes Jesus.
Because God’s children are human beings—made of flesh and blood—the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death. Hebrews 2: 14 (NLT)
Hebrews Chapter 3
In the first Chapter we see Jesus being called God. Now we see the embodiment of Christ as a Messenger and a High Priest in verse 1, and a far greater being than Moses through whom the Law was given.
Study Hebrews 3:7-11 which is taken from Psalm 95:7-11 and see if you can find the connection made with Christ here.
Verses 16-19 cover:
- Rebellion of the Israelites who were led by Moses
- Their revolt and anger even though they had seen God’s power displayed
- Their disobedience because of their unbelief
Hebrews Chapter 4
Those Who Enter the Rest
Verse 1 talks about the importance of entering into God’s rest, and it is only for those who believe (verse 3).
However, verse 6 explains that disobedience is what causes people not to enter into His rest.
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Hebrews 4:12
Hebrews Chapter 4 ends with Jesus being called the Most High Priest.
Hebrews Chapter 5
1. Jesus the Most High Priest
Christ was appointed as a priest (verse 5) and is a priest forever (verse 6).
The human side of Jesus is explained in verses 7-9, as it begins with the statement – In the days of His flesh. Meaning, Jesus being a man was only temporary.
Verses 11-14 goes on to talk about how believers need to move on from thriving on milk to solid food. Maturity comes with those who have discernment of good and evil.
Hebrews Chapter 6
1. Growing in Faith
Paul further discusses the importance of growing and maturing in faith and not keep falling back into sinful ways.
We are to bear good fruit as described in verses 7 and 8.
Although this Chapter begins with teaching us not to go astray, it ends with Paul being hopeful that we who once began strong, will finish strong.
For God is not unjust. He will not forget how hard you have worked for him and how you have shown your love to him by caring for other believers, as you still do. Hebrews 6:10 (NLT)
2. Waiting on God’s Promise
Abraham waited patiently for what God had promised him and he received it.
A parallel between God and Jesus is drawn in verse 17, where it says God will never change His mind (also see Hebrews 1:12; 13:8).
Hebrews Chapter 7
Hebrews Chapter 6 ends with Jesus being our great High priest after the order of Melchizedek.
1. Who is Melchizedek?
King of Salem ➡ who met Abraham after a battle ➡ blessed Abraham ➡ who gave a tenth of his winnings to Melchizedek
Mystery: There is no record of who Melchizedek is in terms of his ancestory, including no beginning or end of life records. (verse 3).
But he resembles the Son of God. His name is translates to King of Justice and King of Peace (verse 2).
Interesting fact: The concept of tithing came into existence after the Law of Moses was given. Yet Abraham had an understanding to give a tenth of his gains as tithe to Melchizedek who accepted it and blessed Abraham.
➡ Bible Study: Priests are from the tribe of Levi, yet Jesus who is from the tribe of Judah is a High Priest.
2. Jesus – A Unique High Priest
Verse 1 clearly states that Jesus is like Melchizedek but not Melchizedek himself.
- Not a descendant of Aaron to become a priest
- But Jesus was a High Priest set aside by God (verse 21)
- He is a Priest forever (verse 24)
But because Jesus lives forever, his priesthood lasts forever. Therefore he is able, once and forever, to save those who come to God through him. He lives forever to intercede with God on their behalf. Hebrews 7:24-25 (NLT)
This verse above in Hebrews, has a close relation to this verse in John where Jesus says,
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6
Hebrews Chapter 8
Earthly Tabernacle and Heavenly Tabernacle
The earthly system of the Tabernacle is a copy of the Heavenly Tabernacle (verse 5).
Bible Study: Do a comparison between the old priesthood in the Old Testament and compare it with the new priesthood of Jesus.
God in the Old Testament confirmed that there will be a New Covenant (study Jeremiah 31:31-34).
This New Covenant was fulfilled by Jesus.
But in fact the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is mediator is superior to the old one, since the new covenant is established on better promises. Hebrews 8:6 NIV
And with the arrival of the New Covenant, the Old Covenant is now obsolete (verse 13).
Hebrews Chapter 9
Old Regulations of Worship
Verses 1-10, gives a detailed description of how the tabernacle was set up – the Holy Place and the Most Holy Place with the Ark of the Covenant.
Verse 7 explains how only the high priest can enter into the Most Holy Place, once a year with blood offerings for his sins and sins of others.
New Way of Worship
We know that Christ who is now our High Priest (verse 11), has entered the Tabernacle in Heaven by His own precious blood.
How much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God. Hebrews 9:14
Jesus is coming back and this time not for sins, but to save those waiting for Him (verse 28).
Hebrews Chapter 10
Christ’s Sacrifice
This Chapter reaffirms what has already been told about the Old and the New Covenant.
Old Covenant ➡ sacrifices had to be repeated over and over again (verse 11-12).
New Covenant ➡ Jesus was the sacrifice, once and for all.
For God’s will was for us to be made holy by the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ, once for all time. Hebrews 10:10 NLT
➡ Bible study verses 12-14
What happens when we continue in sin, even though we know it’s wrong? Verses 26-31.
Hebrews Chapter 11
What is Faith?
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1
The faith of Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Joseph, Moses, the Israelites, Rahab are explained in verses 4-31.
And it doesn’t stop here.
And what more shall I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, were made strong out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight. Hebrews 11:32-34
Read in details the examples of faith in the Bible.
We may have a plan for our lives, but God has a different and much greater plan (verses 39-40).

Hebrews Chapter 12
Bible Study verse 2, that talks about how we look towards the ultimate prize in life through Jesus and remain steadfast through trials.
God’s Divine Discipline
Why does God Discipline His children?
Just as our an earthly father corrects his children, so does our Heavenly Father disciplines whom He loves (verses 7-8).
For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. Hebrews 12:11
Importance of Listening to God
See that you do not refuse him who is speaking. For if they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, much less will we escape if we reject him who warns from heaven. Hebrews 12:25
The rest of this Chapter is very important. It talks about fearing the Lord in the right way and also His Mighty Sovereign nature. We often connect God to a Good Friend or a Good Father, but tend to neglect that He is a lot more than that – an Almighty God.
For our God is a consuming fire. Hebrews 12:29
Hebrews Chapter 13
The Chapter begins with teachings on loving one another and holding on to good moral standards.
Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5
Now that Jesus has paid a price of our sins, we accept His sacrifice in faith and offer praises to God and giving to others – this is what is pleasing to God (Verses 15-16).
