Bible Study on the Book of Galatians
This is a letter of Paul the Apostle, to the church of Galatia. Let us take a look at the 6 Chapters of this book.
Galatians Chapter 1
1. Only One Gospel
The book right away addresses a key passage – Trust No Other Gospel Message.
But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. Galatians 1:8
➡ There is only one Gospel and if any other Gospel is preached, either from a man or from an angel it is a curse.
Verse 9 goes on to confirm the same thing.
2. From Fighter to Preacher
Revelation from Jesus: In verses 11 and 12, Paul tells us that he did not receive the Gospel message from man, but was revealed to him by Jesus.
He acknowledges that he was into Judaism and was a persecutor of Christians, to keep in line with the traditions of the Jews. But when Jesus revealed Himself to Paul – he took a U-turn (Study Acts 9 about Pauls Conversion).
➡ Note: Thanks to Paul, 13-14 books of the New Testament were written by him.
The rest of Galatians Chapter 1 talks about Pauls journey before he began preaching.
Galatians Chapter 2
1. Season of Waiting
The end of Chapter 1 and the beginning of Chapter 2 explains how Paul waited years before he began his mission (Study Galatians 1:15-17 and Galatians 2:1-2).
Paul ➡ sent to preach to the uncircumcised (anyone who is not a Jew)
Peter ➡ sent to preach the Gospel to the circumcised (Jews).
2. Faith Not Works
The bible constantly repeats how we are made righteous before God by our faith in Him and not just our good works.
Justified by Faith:
Yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified. Galatians 2:16
Bible Study on the importance of Faith over Works:
- Hebrews 11:6
- Ephesians 2:8-9
Good works are a result of the fruits of the Spirit, but it starts by faith in Christ.
Faith in Jesus ➡ results in good works
Why are we not justified by the law and our good works? Answer: Galatians 2:21
Bible Study Questions:
- If we are all made righteous by the laws of Moses, then what is the significance of Christ sacrificing Himself on the Cross?
- If it is the Law that makes one righteous, then how was Abraham considered righteous?
- Even before the Law was given, God found Abraham righteous – Why?

Galatians Chapter 3
1. Faith or Law?
In verse 1, Paul confirms that Jesus was publicly crucified on the Cross.
Verses 6-7 describes who are the true sons of Abraham. It is not those who are mere descendants of Abraham but those who believed in God, just as he did.
So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith. Galatians 3:9
2. Live By Faith
The first part of this Chapter, questions if we are to live by faith or by the Law.
The next part, confirms that we are to live by faith.
‘Cursed be anyone who does not confirm the words of this law by doing them.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’ Deuteronomy 27:26
The Old Testament tells us that those who do not follow the Law are under a curse. Christ redeemed us from this curse by becoming the curse.
His body shall not remain all night on the tree, but you shall bury him the same day, for a hanged man is cursed by God. You shall not defile your land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance. Deuteronomy 21:23
So we have two options~:
- Follow all the Laws perfectly and be judged by the Law (impossible) Study Verse 12-13
- Follow Jesus as He completed the works of the Law by dying for our sins (definitely possible) Study Verse 14
While the Old Covenant (Law of Moses) and the New Covenant (Through Jesus) is the two Covenants often talked about. But there is one Covenant previous to this made by God. And this was a promise made by God to Abraham (Genesis 17:2).
This is what God told Abraham,
And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you. Genesis 17:7
Galatians 3:16, explains that this offspring is Christ.
So the promise was given to Abraham and then the Law came in.
3. Why was the Law introduced?
The Law was given so that we don’t fall into sin. Just like we have road rules for our safety and those around us, the Law was given for our own protection – so we do not go against God.
It was like a protective barrier until the arrival of Christ (verse 19).
Previously we lived under the Law ➡ Now we live by faith in Jesus
Verses 26-27 show us that we are all sons of God through faith in Christ.
And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise. Galatians 3:29
Galatians Chapter 4
1. Heirs to the Kingdom of God
Paul makes a good comparison of an heir to inheritance.
Just as how a child is kept under the father guidance and protection until he is mature enough to be given the inheritance. So it is with us. First under the Law, until the right time when Jesus was revealed to us, and He took on Himself our punishment so now we are adopted as son who are heirs of God (Verse 7).
Verses 4-5: Jesus was born under the Law, to redeem us from the Law.
Verses 8-20 talk entirely about Paul’s concern for the Galatians who seem to be wavering in their faith.
2. Hagar and Sarah
Abraham and his wife Sarah wanted a child of their own. But Sarah was going increasingly impatient that she suggested Abraham to have a child through Hagar who worked for them. So Abraham ultimately did have a child through Hagar, but it was not according to the way God had planned (verses 21-31).
Hagar’s son was called Ishmael and when Ishmael was 14 years old, according to God’s promise, Sarah and Abraham had a son of their own called Isaac.
Paul explains that this perfectly demonstrated the Old and the New Covenant.
A son through Hagar was mans plan ➡ works of flesh ➡ Old Covenant
A son through Sarah was God’s plan ➡ God’s promise ➡ New Covenant
| Reflection: How often do we get restless in waiting on God, and take matters into our own hands by creating our own roadmap – only to circle back to God’s plan. Has this happened to you? |
Galatians Chapter 5
1. Jesus Sets us Free
Now that we know we are free in the New Covenant in Christ Jesus – justified by faith and not works.
For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love. Galatians 5:6
Paul Warns in Verse 13: Since we are free in Christ, it does not mean we go against the will of God and sin.
2. Walk in the Spirit
The only way to stay away from sin, is by following the Spirit (verse 16).
Desires of the Spirit are different from the desires of the flesh, as they contradict each other.
Verse 19-21, goes on to list out all that are considered sinful in nature.
3. Fruits of the Spirit
The best way Christians remember the book of Galatians is because the fruits of the Spirit can be found here.
Fruits of the Spirit: Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
If we live by the Spirit we tend to display the fruits of the Spirit.
Galatians Chapter 6
1. Examine Yourselves
As believers we are to help others walk in righteousness away from desires of the flesh. But in doing so we are to keep ourselves in check, so that we may not be tempted to do wrong.
2. Do Not Give Up
Finally, do not give up (verse 9).
It may seem tiring, and feel like no positive outcome. But remember that the bible tells us in the book of Isaiah, that when the time is right, I the Lord, will make it happen.

Main Message of Galatians
The lesson behind the book of Galatians is to understand that Christ died on the Cross for our sins and was resurrected to life so we may receive eternal life. This free gift of salvation can only be received by faith in Jesus and not in our own efforts and strength (good works).
