One of the most reassuring verses of Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour in the Bible, that brings with it power and glory is found in Philippians 2:9-10,
Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth.
God the Father, has given the Lord Jesus (God in flesh) the power and authority to be name above all names, on heaven and on earth. This is just one of the verses where we see the mighty power and authority of Jesus Christ.
In fact, while reading the Bible, you may have come across the phrase “I am”. These statements are significant because they reveal true identity and purpose of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus.
In the Gospel of John, Jesus uses the phrase “I am” to describe Himself in several instances, and each statement provides a glimpse into His divine nature.
One of the most famous “I am” statements of Jesus is “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6).
This statement emphasizes that Jesus is the only way to the Father in heaven, and that He embodies truth and life.
What is the Significance of the I AM statements of Jesus?
As you may already know, the Bible is broken down into the Old Testament and the New Testament.
The Old Testament contains the law of Moses and God’s commandments set forth for the people. The law was made because of the intense nature of sin during those days and the law helped people who feared God to stay away from sin and temptation.
Two of the biggest sins mentioned in the Old Testament was idolatry and sexual immorality. Both of which infuriated God.
Yet people continued to sin, and it is through Jesus Christ, who we read in the New Testament that we have been redeemed and been saved. It is through the death and resurrection of Jesus – the Lamb of God – that we can receive eternal life.
To explain this a little further, in the Old Testament, if anyone sinned they would offer a sacrifice to God, which was usually their best flock or crop from their harvest.
But all men and women on earth have sinned and continue to sin, this very day.
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23
Jesus was the only man to have lived on earth to have not sinned.
God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5:21
Because of the sinless nature of Jesus, He was our sacrificial lamb to give up His life on the cross, so that through His death and resurrection, makes us free from sin, so that we may have life everlasting.
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23
So God in His infinite mercy gave the world His only Son, that whoever may believe may in Him will have eternal life (John 3:16).
Here’s the problem.
Many people fail to see the connection between Jesus and God. That is why, by meditating and studying these “I am” statements, we can gain a better understanding of who Jesus really is and what He came to do.
God and Jesus both make these I AM statements, that clearly show us they are one.
There are many Bible verses that show this unity:
In Mark 9:37 Jesus says, whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.
Why Many Do Not Believe Jesus Christ is God
Most of the teachings of Jesus Christ, were in parables. So it is no surprise that Jesus never clearly stated that He was God in any verse.
So when an unbeliever wants to understand if Jesus is God and asked to be shown a Bible verse, it may not be possible to clearly show Jesus stating that He is God. Even when Jesus was asked to explain Himself to the Pharisees, if He was the truly the Messiah – this is how Jesus answered.
Jesus answered, “I did tell you, but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name testify about me, but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. I and the Father are one. John 10:25-30
I think the last sentence needs no further explanation from Jesus to know that He is indeed God in human form. And to add to this, when Jesus made the above statement, they picked up stones to stone Him. The only reason they did this was because Jesus was claiming to be God.
“We are not stoning you for any good work,” they replied, “but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.” John 10:33
Right there in the above verse, we can clearly see Jesus is indeed claiming to be God, although not clearly expressing it – but the Pharisees did see the claim and Jesus never denied that He wasn’t God.
The fact that there are many Christians who don’t believe that Jesus is God is merely because Jesus never explicitly mentioned it, but that is just the manner in which Jesus spoke. This is also mentioned in the Gospel of John, that Jesus used a figure of speech and the Pharisees did not understand.
Jesus used this figure of speech, but the Pharisees did not understand what he was telling them. (John 10:6)
The only way to understand who Jesus really is, is by consistently reading the Bible and asking the Holy Spirit in prayer to guide us in wisdom and knowledge.
In John 14:26 Jesus says, But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
The only way we can fully understand the nature and power of Jesus Christ is by committing to read the word and be led by the Holy Spirit.
God the Father, God the Son and the Holy Spirit are all one and the same, who you may have heard as the Holy Trinity. God spoke to the people through prophets in the Old testament, Jesus taught people in the New Testament, and after Jesus was risen from the dead, we have all been given the Holy Spirit to guide and lead us in knowledge, wisdom and in truth.
Lord Jesus Christ
I believe with all my heart that Jesus Christ is the one true God, who became flesh, died on the cross and rose from the dead so that we may be cleansed of our sins.

Is Jesus the Real God?
Moses in the Old Testament asks God what His name was, and God says to Moses, I AM WHO I AM. And He follows the statement by saying tell them that – I Am has sent me to you.
Exodus 3:13-15 – Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?” God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’” God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob – has sent me to you.’ “This is my name forever, the name you shall call me
from generation to generation.
Now when we take a look at the Gospel of John, we read that Jesus was answering the questions of the Jews, when He boldly mentions I AM.
John 8:58 – “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!”
Jesus Christ is the one true God!
I believe it is for each of us to read the Holy bible and be led by the Holy Spirit through scripture to understand the true nature of Jesus. From what I have personally experienced, the hand of God has been so evident on my life that it is hard for me to neglect the fact that Jesus Christ is the real God.
