Prayer Before Reading the Bible

If you are going to study the Bible on your own, here is a simple prayer you can say before you begin.

Heavenly Father, I come before You and ask You for the knowledge and wisdom to understand Your Word. Clear my mind from distractions and fill it instead with the scriptures I read, so that the verses are ingrained in me. God, I pray that I live worthy of Your presence and ask for an overflow of Your grace and mercy in Jesus name. Amen.

Why Pray Before Bible Study?

Prayer is how we talk to God and build and intimate relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ.

It is through prayer that we communicate, and it is through prayer that we ask for His guidance and wisdom.

One area where prayer is especially important is in Bible study. Before diving into the Word, we should take a moment to pray and ask God to open our hearts and minds to His truths.

When we pray, we are saying to God, “We need your help. We cannot understand your Word on our own. We need your Spirit to guide us.” And when we pray, we are also expressing our faith in God’s ability to reveal Himself to us through His Word.

A prayer before Bible study is not just a ritual or a formality. It is a way to acknowledge our dependence on God and to invite Him to be with us during our study.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
