Is Jesus the Most High God?
Jesus is central to the Christian faith, but an important question remains: Is Jesus the Most High God? The Bible clearly identifies Jesus as the Christ, the Messiah, the Son of God, the Son of Man, and the Lamb of God (Here is the full list of names). Yet the question of whether Jesus Himself is the Most High God can be found in one Bible verse.
Why is the Title “the Most High God” Important?
When it comes to the Christian belief of the Trinity—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit as one God—it can be difficult to understand how three can be one.
But what is important to understand that God is unlike man, in wisdom and knowledge. Our limited mind adds three persons to make three gods. But in fact, the Lord constantly represents Himself in the bible as One God (Deuteronomy 6:4). At the same time, He also tells us that there are things that man cannot understand – like how God works. For example Isaiah 55:9 God says,
For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
Here is another passage where God tells us not everything about God is easily understood.
As you do not know the way the spirit comes to the bones in the womb of a woman with child, so you do not know the work of God who makes everything. Ecclesiastes 11:5
Having said this, we see throughout the bible how people responded to Jesus, like:
- He was worshipped as a baby by the wise men
- Thomas calls Jesus as My God in John 20:28
- Jesus calls Himself the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End in Revelation 22:13 – which are titles attributed to God alone
While these are just a few, you can read a complete list of verses that show us Jesus is God here.
Jesus is the Most High God Bible Verse
In Luke 1:76 John the Baptist’s father, Zechariah prophesies this about John,
And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways

Now at first glance this might seem like a general statement about John being the prophet of “the Most High God” – the Father and “the Lord” in the latter part of this statement representing the Son, Jesus.
However, this statement about John preparing the way of the Lord is an Old Testament prophecy about God – Yahweh.
A voice cries: “In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.” Isaiah 40:3
This is the prophecy written in Isaiah regarding John the Baptist, and this is confirmed by the Gospel accounts in Matthew 3:3, Mark 1:3, Luke 3:4 and John 1:23. All four Gospels written by four different authors confirm that John the Baptist fulfils the prophecy of Isaiah 40:3.
Why is this important? It is because of what Isaiah 40:3 says. If John is preparing the way for our God, and mentions this just before Jesus’s public ministry, what does this make Jesus?
Luke 1:76 – calls John, as the Prophet of the Most High.
Isaiah 40:3 – talks about making straight the path for our God.
John the Baptist also says this about Jesus,
John answered them, “I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know, even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” John 1:26
The very next day He sees Jesus as says,
The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’ John 1:29-30
John gives such a big intro and build up to the coming of Jesus that it is hard to deny that Jesus is the Most High God, that John has been talking about all this while.
