The book of Philemon is one of the shortest New Testament letters, and it is a story about:

  1. Becoming a new creation in Christ by faith
  2. Christ took our punishment on the Cross
  3. We are now free

All of this is explained in this one page letter to a believer in Christ called Philemon – also a friend of Paul the Apostle. The letter is regarding a person called Onesimus who is a slave of Philemon.

Onesimus had for some reason, previously wronged Philemon and is now in prison with Paul but is now a changed man. He has grown in faith and is a believer in Christ.

Paul now writes to Philemon – his master – to not only accept Onesimus back but also to treat him as a brother in Christ.

Paul prays and thanks Philemon for all his good works of faith in Christ (verses 4-7).

Although Paul has a right to demand of this request, he prefers to simply appeal to him in favour (verses 8-9).

Paul’s Request

That Philemon shows kindness to Onesimus, as he has now grown in faith while in prison with Paul, and is now sending him back to Philemon for the spread of the Gospel (verse 10-13).

Verse 16 shows Paul elaborating that Onesimus must no longer be a slave but like a brother to Paul and to the Lord.

Furthermore, Paul states that if Onesimus owes Philemon something, that Paul himself would repay it (verses 17-19). This resembles exactly what Jesus did on the Cross.

Bible verses about Jesus taking our Punishment

Jesus said,

For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. Mark 10:45

But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8

For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5:21

Paul ends this letter saying he is confident that Philemon will accept Paul’s request (verse 21).
