2 Thessalonians Bible Study

2 Thessalonians 1

The second letter to the Thessalonians also shows us their growing faith in Christ (just as the first letter) and their love for one another.

After giving thanks in verses 3 and 4, Paul talks about the coming Judgement. While believers go through seasons of trials and tribulations (John 16:33), it is not long before the coming of the final judgement of God (verses 6 onwards).

Why is it important to know God and obey the Gospel of Jesus?

Answer: Verses 8 and 9.

This event is called the Coming Judgement of Jesus.

Bible study ➡ Matthew 25:31-34, Isaiah 13:9, Isaiah 2:12, Joel 2:3

But there is Good News through Jesus,

Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. John 5:24

2 Thessalonians 2

After talking about the Coming Judgement, Paul now talks about the believers being gathered up to Jesus in the clouds. This is something that many call as the Rapture of the Church.

It is an event described in the bible as a day when believers will be caught up to meet Jesus in the clouds.

If we go back to the book of Acts, we read in the first Chapter, that after Jesus was resurrected, He appeared to His disciples and many others. This book also shows us how Jesus left the world,

And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.” Acts 1:9-11

This verse tells us that Jesus will return, just as He left us – being taken into heaven and lifted up in a cloud

Similarly, the 2 Thessalonians 2 begins with coming of Jesus and us being gathered to Him.

Other Bible Verses about the Rapture ➡ 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17, Matthew 24:36-44, John 14:3,

But Paul reassures the believers not to be afraid or alarmed of that day. (verse 2)

Paul then goes on to talk about the coming of the Son of Destruction who will be revealed before the above events.

Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction. 2 Thessalonians 2:3

The Lawless One

What does the lawless man do (verses 4-10):

  • Exalts himself above every other god
  • Takes a seat at the temple of God
  • Proclaims to be God
  • He will perform false signs and wonders
  • He will deceive many
  • Right now he is not revealed to everyone yet
  • Jesus will be the One to destroy him

Encouragement to Believers

In verses 13-17, Paul encourages believers – God’s chosen ones – whom He saved, that we are to hold on to the eternal grace, comfort and hope that we receive through Christ.

2 Thessalonians 3

A Call for Prayer

Paul asks for prayer of the wicked who come against them, as the Lord is faithful to guard Paul from the evil one (verses 1-3).

May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ. 2 Thessalonians 3:5

Words of Knowledge

The Lord is our provider. But at the same time, the bible talks about not being idle and the importance of working hard in verses 6-12.

Study verses: Proverbs 14:23, Proverbs 12:11, Ephesians 4:28, Colossians 3:23

The next three verses are important words of knowledge:

Verse 13: Do not grow tired of doing good

Verse 14: Have nothing to do with those who do not want to obey the word.

Verse 15: But do not look at him as an enemy, but warn them as brother.
