1 Thessalonians 1
Paul gives thanks to God for the faith and love of the Thessalonians in the Lord Jesus Christ – verses 2-3.
Verses 4-6 goes on to say how they welcomed the message of salvation through Christ, by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Their faith in God had spread to Macedonia, Achaia and far beyond. The Thessalonians turned from serving idols to serving the One true God and are looking forward to the coming of His Son, who will rescue them from the wrath to come – verses 9-10.
1 Thessalonians 2
Paul makes it clear in verse 3, that his motives are not impure or delusional, but rather comes from God who entrusted him with the spread of the Gospel.
When spreading the Gospel message, we speak to please God ➡ not to please people (verse 4).
But just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not to please man, but to please God who tests our hearts. 1 Thessalonians 2:4
Neither seek glory from men but share the news with love and affection. (verses 6-8).
In verses 9-12, Paul explains how he was never a burden to any of them as he worked hard, day and night. He also reminds them of how he encouraged and guided them to live a life worthy of God.
From verse 13 onwards, Paul appreciates the Thessalonians for remaining strong in faith even in the midst of persecution.
1 Thessalonians 3
Paul writes, that when Timothy was sent to the Thessalonians, He comes back with a good report that the believers are still remaining strong in faith.
Paul was encouraged by this, as he was afraid that the enemy may have distracted the Thessalonians and thrown them off track (verse 5).
And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, as we do for you, so that he may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints. 1 Thessalonians 3:12-13
1 Thessalonians 4
The Will of God
The will of God is that we sanctify ourselves ➡ to be made holy and set apart for the glory of God (verse 3).
Verses 4-6 teaches us how to achieve this.
For God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness. 1 Thessalonians 4:7
And as a believer, it is God who is our Provider. As we work with our hands and live a God-fearing life, we trust and believe in none but God.
Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5
So that you may walk properly before outsiders and be dependent on no one. 1 Thessalonians 4:12
Coming of the Lord
Verses 13-18 talk about the coming of the Lord Jesus.
We are to live in hope, looking for the coming of Christ when the dead in Christ and the believers who are alive will be caught up in the clouds to meet Jesus in the air.
Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. 1 Thessalonians 4:17
These are much debated verses that talk about a day when believers will meet the Jesus in the air. When this day will occur or where in the prophetic timeline this event happens, is only known to God.
After writing about this event, Paul ends this Chapter by telling us that we are to encourage each other with what has been said (verse 18).
1 Thessalonians 5
The Day of the Lord
While Chapter 4, talks about a time of encouragement, Chapter 5 talks about the wrath of God that is to come. This sudden shift of events from hope (1 Thessalonians 4:13; 18) to destruction (1 Thessalonians 5:3) comes off to the reader as two separate events.
But Paul tells us not to worry about when all of this is to happen.
Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need to have anything written to you. For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 1 Thessalonians 5:1-2
In the Matthew 24:42, Jesus tells us not to worry about when all these are to take place.
And Paul in verse 9, explains why;
For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep we might live with him. Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. 1 Thessalonians 5:9
Bible study on the Coming of the Lord: 2 Thessalonians 2; Matthew 24:36-44, Luke 21: 25-28, James 5:7-8, Revelation 1:7, 1 Corinthians 15: 51-52
Bible study on the Day of the Lord (God’s Divine Judgement): 2 Peter 3:10; Isaiah 13:6-9; Jeremiah 46:10; Ezekiel 30:3, Luke 21:21-23, Isaiah 2:12, Joel 1:15, Joel 2:11, Joel 2:31, Amos 5:18, Amos 5:20, Malachi 4:5 and Zephaniah 1:14-15
But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief. For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness. 1 Thessalonians 5:4-5
Instead, we must continue to walk in faith and put out hope in Jesus Christ who is the source of our salvation – verse 8.
The Good News:
For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep we might live with him. 1 Thessalonians 5:9-10
Final Words of Paul to the Thessalonians
Verse 14 ➡ Be encouraging, patient and help the weak
Verse 15 ➡ Do not repay evil for evil
Verse 16 ➡ Rejoice always
Verse 17 ➡ Pray without ceasing
Verse 18 ➡ Give thanks
Verses 20-21 ➡ Do not despise prophecies, but test them instead
These are powerful closing statements of Paul that are worth taking note.
