Romans Chapter 1

God promised Good News

Paul begins this letter writing about the Good News that God promised us ages ago through the prophets in the Old Testament. This is the Gospel of Jesus Christ, made available to both Jews and Gentiles (verses 1-6).

Salvation for all

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. Romans 1:16

We are made righeous through faith in Christ ➡ verse 17

Proof that God Exists

Although God made His presence obvious in plain sight, there still remains this question – Does God exist? To this, Paul gives us the answer in verses 18-24:

  • Suppress the truth by way of unrighteousness
  • God’s power and divine nature is obvious even in creation
  • They know God, yet do not want to honor Him
  • Some claim to be wise by following idolatry
  • As God does not impose ➡ He allows people to follow their desires

Sin that God Detests ➡ verses 25-30

Romans Chapter 2

God’s Justice

God does not show favoritism (verse 11) and God judges all (verse 5-8).

Study ➡ verse 12-16 ➡ hidden things will come to light

The Concept of Morality

Even Gentiles, who do not have God’s written law, show that they know his law when they instinctively obey it, even without having heard it. They demonstrate that God’s law is written in their hearts, for their own conscience and thoughts either accuse them or tell them they are doing right. Romans 2:14-15 (NLT)

The Law

God’s law is valid only when it is obeyed in full ➡ verses 17-25

A True Jew

For no one is a Jew who is merely one outwardly, nor is circumcision outward and physical. But a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter. His praise is not from man but from God. Romans 2:28-29

Romans Chapter 3

Although Paul mentions that those who have a heart for God, as being a true Jew, He goes on to also state the previledge of being a Jew. That Jews are the ones whom God chose to entrust and reveal Himself (verse 1-2).

Why the Law?

Bible Study ➡ verses 5-8

Regardless of being a Jew or a Gentile, we have all sinned (verse 9-10).

Why was the Law given? Answer: Verses 19-20

Why the Christ?

The new way ➡ verses 21-22

All of us are sinners ➡ verse 23

But God made us righteous through Jesus ➡ verse 24

Jesus replaced the Old Testament sacrificial offering by becoming our sacrificial offering for our sins (study verses 25-26). We are made right with God, through faith in Jesus (verse 28).

Romans Chapter 4

Faith not Works

God counted Abraham as righteous even before the Old Testament Law was given (verses 1-3).

Faith: So how was Abraham made right with God, before the Law? Answer: Abraham believe in God and had faith in Him.

This echoes Jesus’ message in the Gospels and what the Apostles preached (John 14:1, John 3:16, Acts 11:17, Romans 10:9).

Works: People work to earn wages, but God wants us to receive eternal life as a free gift by believing in Christ, not merely by doing good works. Salvation is a gift by God (Epehsians 2:8-10) for both Jews and Gentiles (verses 9-13).

To recap: verses 16-17

Hope

Finding hope, when there is no hope ➡ verses 18-23

The faith of Abraham ➡ He kept believing ➡ his faith did not weaken ➡ believed in God’ promise ➡ he was fully convinced God would do it ➡ God counted him righteous.

We too can be called righteous, through Christ (verses 24-25)

Romans Chapter 5

Problems and trials in life help us develop endurance ➡ character ➡ hope (verse 3-5).

While we were still sinner Christ died for us (verse 6-8).

Adam and Christ

One man’s sin (Adam) replaced by One man’s sacrifice (Jesus).

Adam Sin’s (verse 15) God’s gracious gift – Jesus
Adam’s sin brought condemnation (verse 18)Christ’s sacrifice brought salvation
Sinned ruled (verse 21)Grace rules

Romans Chapter 6

The power of sin is broken for believers, through the death and resurrection of Christ (verses 1-5).

How Christ’s death and resurrection sets us free ➡ verses 5-11

As you are set free by the grace of God, you are free from the Law, but this should not mean that we continue to sin (verses 12-18).

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23

Romans Chapter 7

Explaining how the Law works with a husband and wife narrative (verses 1-3).

As the wife is free from the principles of marriage when her husband dies, so it is with Christ.

We are now released from the power of the Law after Christ ➡ verses 4-6.

The law shows us our sin; without the law there is no understanding and moral values (verses 11-12).

Verses 18-21 is a powerful truth behind sin.

The one who frees us from sin ➡ Jesus Christ our Lord (verse 25).

Romans Chapter 8

Holy Spirit and Sin

Dominated by sin. Dominated by the Holy Spirit (verse 5).

How sin controls mind vs how the Holy Spirit brings peace (verse 6).

But…

But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.) And Christ lives within you, so even though your body will die because of sin, the Spirit gives you life because you have been made right with God. Romans 8:9-10 (NLT)

Children of God ➡ verses 14-17

The Glory to Come

Although we have the Holy Spirit with us, we all still go through trials and sufferings in this life as we patiently await the future glory (verses 18-24). When God’s children will be revealed, in the new bodies that He has promised (verse 23).

The Holy Spirit aligns with God’s will (verse 27).

The chosen ones ➡ verses 28-30

The unimaginable love of God even in a world filled with disasters ➡ verses 35-39

Romans Chapter 9

Is Jesus God?

Is Jesus God? ➡ verses 4-5

Who are the descendants of Abraham?

Although Abraham had other children, it was only through Isaac that the promise was fulfilled. God appeared to Abraham and Sarah regarding Isaac birth, as he was the promised child (Genesis 17). So it is not merely being a physical descendant of Abraham (Romans 9:6-8).

Isaac marries Rebekkah and even before their twins were born, God gave them a promise ➡ Genesis 25:23

God’s plans are not based on our good works, but on His soveriegnty ➡ verses 11-23

Hence the gentiles are also God’s people ➡ verses 25-28

To recap ➡ verses 30-33

Romans Chapter 10

This entire chapter talks about the misunderstood salvation of Christ by the Israelites (verses 1-4).

Way of the Law: verse 5

Way of Faith: verse 6

The Message

Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. Romans 10:9-10

Sharing of this Gospel message ➡ verses 13-15

Gentiles are now a part of God’s promise, but that does not give room to brag (verse 18).

Paul’s comparison of a wild olive tree and a special olive tree (study verses 17-24).

God is the Source of Everything Good

Gods mercy is for both the Jews and the Gentiles, but it is important to make sure that pride does not get in the way (verse 25).

Nature of God regarding His promises and His gifts ➡ verse 28-29

For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen. Romans 11:36

Romans Chapter 12

The acceptable kind of Godly worship (verse 1) and how to find out God’s will for you (verse 2). In this process beware that pride does not set in (verse 3).

Use your gifts (verses 6-8):

  1. To prophesy

Romans Chapter 14

Mature and New Believers

Whether it’s about eating certain foods (verses 2-4), observing certain days as more Holy to the Lord (verse 5), or refusing to eat certain foods (verse 6). Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God and do not look down on the other believer. God has accepted both the mature and the new believer and there is no need for arguments on such matter.

Why do you pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God. Romans 14:10

It is not a matter of what we eat, but about living in the joy of the Holy Spirit, serving Christ – this pleases God (verse 17-18)

It is not a matter of what you eat, but about following your convictions ➡ verses 20-23

Romans Chapter 15

Building Up the Body of Christ

Just as Christ lived a life of spreading the Gospel and building up the believers, so are we to do the same (verses 1-4).

Live in harmony with each other, as followers of Christ by giving glory to God (verses 5-7).

Christ came to fulfil the promises (verse 8) and to reach the Gentiles (verses 9-12).

Paul’s Mission

To preach the Gospel where it has never been heard (verse 20), as it has also been mentioned in the scriptures (verse 21).

Paul was an apostle, chosen by Jesus to spread the Gospel to the gentiles (non Jews) – verses 16-17.

Although Paul says that he has reason to boast regarding all the God has done through him – he would never boast about himself, but only what Jesus has done through him (verses 18-19).

Verses 23-33, ends with Paul stating his plans for his journey to Spain and Rome.

Romans Chapter 16

He goes on to express his greetings to many other men and women of God in verses 5-16.

To the only wise God be glory forevermore through Jesus Christ! Amen. Romans 16:27
