The book of Revelation is the last book of the Bible and the New Testament. It gives us a glimpse into future events that are to take place.
The Bible starts with the book of Genesis – In the Beginning…
Ends with the Book of Revelation – In the Last days…
This book is indeed a revelation of Jesus Christ to John in a vision (Rev 1:8), while he was on the island of Patmos (Rev 1:9).

Revelation Chapter 1
Why is the book of Revelation important?
Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written in it, for the time is near. Revelation 1:3
Most importantly the deity of Jesus Christ is revealed by what Jesus said about Himself – namely calling Himself the First and the Last, a title used for God alone in the Old Testament (Isaiah 44:6).
The First and the Last – Revelation 1:8
Jesus told John, that He indeed is the First and the Last – Revelation 1:17-18
Jesus says He is coming soon and calls Himself the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End – Revelation 22:12-13
The Seven Churches
John heard a loud voice telling him to write what he sees in a letter, specific to seven churches (verse 11). Each of these churches back then, currently represent one kind of church even today. By evaluating for ourselves, what kind of church we represent, we can not alter our ways – by repenting – and turning back to the Lord.
The seven churches in Revelations are:
- Ephesus
- Smyrna
- Pergamum
- Thyatira
- Sardis
- Philadelphia
- Laodicea
Jesus only fully appreciates two of these seven churches and we are to aim to fall into that category (Church of Smyrna and Philadelphia). While the other churches are given warnings and need for repentance, and advice on how to change.
The Vision of Jesus
Description of Jesus: Verses 10-16
- One Like the Son of Man
- Long robe, golden sash, hair white like wool – like snow
- Eyes like a flame of fire
- Feet like bronze
- Voice like the roar of many waters
- Seven stars in His right hand, and out of His mouth was a sharp two-edged sword
- Face was like the sun shining in full strength
Words spoken by Jesus: Verses 17-20
- Fear not, I Am the First and the Last
- I died and now I Am alive
- Seven stars ➡ angels
- Seven lampstands ➡ churches
Revelation Chapter 2
Chapter 2, covers the letters to the first four churches – Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira.
Church of Ephesus
This letter is from: The One who holds the seven stars and walks among the lampstands (verse1).
What Jesus appreciates: Their works, their toil and patient endurance.
Where the change needs to happen: Their heart was not right with God. The love they had for God at the start seems to be gradually diminishing.
#Bible Study: Jeremiah 17:10, 1 Samuel 16:7, 1 Corinthians 2:10, Matthew 5:8
Church of Smyrna
This letter is from: The words of the First and the Last (verse 8)
What Jesus appreciates: This is one of the two churches that Jesus did not find any wrong-doings. Instead He encourages them to not fear the tribulations that come their way.
It was a faithful church that faced tribulations.
Where the change needs to happen: None needed
To paraphrase verse 19, Jesus says, Do not fear, be faithful even in the midst of trials and I will give you the crown of life. Jesus was pointing them to the greater prize that awaits them.
#Study: Philippians 3:14 and Matthew 5:12
Church of Pergamum
This letter is from: The words of Him who has the two-edged sword (verse 12)
What Jesus appreciates: While they hold fast to the name of Jesus and did not deny their faith, their was a problem.
The problem ➡ Compromised Christians following pagan rituals, immorality and idolatry.
#Study: Leviticus 18
Church of Thyatira
This letter is from: The Son of God with eyes like a flame of fire and feet like burnished bronze (verse 18).
What Jesus appreciates: They were commended for their love, faith and service (verse 19)
The problem: They were tolerant to things that were detestable to God (verse 20-22)
Revelation Chapter 3
Church of Sardis
This letter is from: The words of Him who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars.
What Jesus expects ➡ wake up and repent (verse 3).
What Jesus appreciates: Although there are some righteous people in Sardis, it is Jesus’s desire that as many will be entered into the Book of Life (verse 5)
Church of Philadelphia
This letter is from: From the Holy One and the True One
What Jesus appreciates: This is the church that most of us should aim towards. This church has kept His word of patient endurance.
Because you have kept my word about patient endurance, I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming on the whole world, to try those who dwell on the earth. Rev 3:10
Church of Laodicea
How Jesus opens the letter: The words of the Faithful and True witness (verse 14)
Jesus goes straight to the problem ➡ a lukewarm church (verses 15-16).
A church that is neither hot nor cold for Christ and believes they prospered by their own ability and strength.
