After Jesus had died, He appeared to His apostles, proving to them that He was still alive and reminds them of the coming of the Holy Spirit (verse 4). Jesus finally ascends into Heaven, 40 days after His death and He was taken up by a cloud.

And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, andx said, “Men of Galille, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.” Acts 1:10-11

Verses 12-25, show a series of events that lead up to Matthias joining the Apostles, replacing Judas (who betrayed Jesus).

Acts Chapter 2

The Holy Spirit Arrives

50 days after Passover is called the day of Pentecost. This is the day the Holy Spirit arrives with His Holy presence falling on the disciples in power (verses 1-4). The begin to speak in various tongues that are understood by those hearing them speak (verse 11).

Peter then quotes prophet Joel in response to them (Joel 2:28-32, Acts 2:16-21) and Psalm 16 (which spoke of the Messiah)

Peter concludes his speech by stating that Jesus is both Lord and Messiah whom they crucified (verse 36).

What Next?

Realising what has happend the crowd asks the apostles what they are to do now.

And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:38

Acts Chapter 3

Peter Heals

The first verse states that 3pm was a time of prayer, that Peter and John were attending at the Temple. At the gate called the Beautiful Gate, lay a crippled who asked them for some money. Peter makes a power and miraculous statement,

Then Peter said, “Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.” Acts 3:6 (NKJV)

The man was instantly healed and praised God. All who saw were amazed (verses 7-11).

Peter never misses an opportunity and begins to preach to the crowd.

Jesus ➡ Author of Life (verse 15).

Peter encourages them that regardless of happened, it was God’s Holy plan to redeem His people, and for all to take comfort in the return of the Lord Jesus Christ (verses 20-21).

Now repent of your sins and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped away. Acts 3:19 (NLT)

Acts Chapter 4

As Peter and John continued to speak they were arrested by the priests and the Sadducees. When Peter was asked to give an explanation of his teachings, he glorifies Jesus and echoes what Jesus said in John 14:6.

And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12

In verse 18, although they get warned not to speak in the name of Jesus, the apostles refuse, stating that they rather obey God than men.

Prophecy Fulfiled

Peter quotes Psalm 2:1-2 explaining the prophecy that was fulfiled by Jesus’ crucifixion. But again reminds them that all of this is God’s plan that had come to pass.

Acts Chapter 5

Ananias and Sapphira

During this time all the people were sharing their possessions, so that there was none that was lacking (Acts 4:34-35).

Unfortunately, Ananias and his wife Sapphira didn’t share the same sentiments (verses 1-2). They sold some property and kept aside money for themselves, telling the disciples that they were handing over the full amount.

The consequences of their action can be seen in verses 3-11.

The Hurdles

The apostles continue to perform many signs and wonders in the name of Jesus (verses 12-16). But this resulted in them being put in prison again.

But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said, “Go and stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this Life.” Acts 5:19-20

So they went back to the Temple to preach. But this made the high council even more furious (verse 33).

On Gameliel’s advice they let the men go and ordered them again, not to speak in the name of Jesus (verses 33-42).

Acts Chapter 6

Due to a certain dispute between believers, the apostles chose seven men of God to help them with other tasks. This allowed the disciples to focus on preaching the Gospel. One among the seven was Stephen.

Stephen

Stephen who was filled with the Holy Spirit got involved in a debate with men from a certain Synagogue. This resulted in them bringing in false witnesses to testify against Stephen.

Acts Chapter 7

On being brought to the high council because of these accusations, Stephen gave a detailed speech about much of the Old Testament history, starting with the story of Abraham and ending with Jesus the Messiah (Verses 2-52).

At this, the Jewish leaders were furious. But Stephen looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus at God’s right hand (verse 55).

As they stoned him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” He fell to his knees, shouting, “Lord, don’t charge them with this sin!” And with that, he died. Acts 7:59-60 (NLT)

Acts Chapter 8

This is where Saul is first introduced in the Bible, as the one who witnessed and agreed with Stephen being stonned, which resutled in the believers (except the apostles) scrambling in fear.

Simon the Sorcerer

Philip headed to Samaria to preach the Gospel and performed miracles. A sorcerer named Simon also believed in Philips message and followed him (verses 12-13). While everyone who believed we baptised with water, they were not yet baptised by the Holy Spirit. So Peter and John laid hands on them and they started receiving the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.

But because of some Jews who were not in support of Paul’s teachings, they moved to Berea, who were more open to his teachings.

And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth. Acts 17:11 (NLT)

Idolatry

Paul now moves to Athens to preach to the Jews and God-fearing Gentiles. But he was also upset about the level of idolatry that flourished in the city – verses 18 onwards.

Acts Chapter 18

Paul at Corinth

Paul continues to preach that Jesus is the Messiah at Corinth, whether they accepted it or not (verse 5-6). He gets acquainted with Aquila and his wife Priscilla.

Paul’s night vision:

And the Lord said to Paul one night in a vision, “Do not be afraid, but go on speaking and do not be silent, for I am with you, and no one will attack you to harm you, for I have many in this city who are my people.” Acts 18:9-10

So Paul stayed and preached for a year and a half.

In verse 18, Paul shaves his head as part of the Nazarite vow in Numbers 6:5
