One of the most valuable lessons my parents taught me as a child, was the act of giving to others who are in need.

But sometimes it can be hard to let go of our material possessions. Even if we have the love of God within us, the desires of the flesh can take over the desires of the Spirit. By this I mean that we may have the urge to give, but we never get to the act of actually letting go of our money and giving to the needy.

How the Holy Spirit Led Me into Giving to Others

The Holy Spirit taught me this valuable lesson through the Old Testament.

The Holy Spirit is the third person in the Holy Trinity, which is God the Father, God the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit (Mathew 28:19).

I once felt the urge to donate to a charity. But somehow I kept delaying it. No matter how I ignored it, advertisements of it kept popping up on my Facebook feeds and on YouTube. I understand the way the social media algorithm works by understanding our internet usage. So I thought nothing of it, and I continued to ignore it.

To make matters worse, I started blocking those ads, but it still kept showing up.

Talk about being stubborn!

It was just the previous month, I decided to cancel a monthly expense and I could sense the Holy Spirit telling me to put that money into the charity instead.

But what did I do? I still refused to listen to the Holy Spirit.

So the day of my revelation came, when it finally hit me that it was indeed the Holy Spirit talking to me. The main reason I kept putting off the monthly donation, was because I refused to believe it was from God, but just my mind playing games.

Since I was afraid to start a monthly commitment, I decided to give a one-time donation instead, hoping all of these “feelings” would go away.

But it didn’t.

It was like I was trying to negotiate with the Holy Spirit.

A couple of days later when I was doing my daily bible study I reached Joshua 6. If you haven’t heard about this, it is the story about the disobedience of Achan, the Israelite.

Here’s a quick background.

The Israelites had just defeated Jericho through the Mighty hand of God, and from their victory, had accumulated all the gold and silver and other precious metals from the Land of Jericho.

Joshua had instructed them not to take these devoted items for themselves, but that it must go into the treasury of God. Failing to do so will bring about destruction.

All the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron are sacred to the Lord and must go into his treasury. Joshua 6:19

Because Achan refused to take heed to this instruction, and saved up these treasures secretly for himself, the next war the Israelites marched towards (which was to Ai) led them to defeat.

This was one of the first defeats in a long time for Israel, and it was because of the wrath of God for their sin (even if it was just one man’s fault).

God was angry about Achan’s sin that it affected the entire nation of Israel, and finally Achan was put to death and the nation of Israel was restored back, with God blessings.

While this may seem like a harsh penalty, reading the entire Chapter will give you a better picture of the situation.

This story however, opened my eyes and it felt even more clear what the Holy Spirit was trying to tell me.

The reason this resonated with me was because God is a compassionate Father, and giving to those in need is like giving to the Kingdom of God.

While I used to make one-off donations whenever I could, I never followed the exact instructions of the Holy Spirit to give each month.

It was like me not giving to God what belonged to God.

I believe the money we make, the success we see, the material possessions we own, are all given to us by the grace of God.

If His mighty hand wasn’t on my life today, I wouldn’t be where I am. So instead of simply reading the bible, I learnt that I need to act on things that I am called to do.

The one and only way to know if it truly is the Holy Spirit guiding you, is by reading the bible and praying.

When I first started reading the bible, I didn’t think of it as something that was going to give me a new revelation.

I thought the bible would just teach us to be kind, loving, sharing and caring. And that we need to do good works to enter the kingdom of God. I was so wrong!

If you have never read the bible in great depths, I would urge you to start reading.

Let me tell you something. The bible never made sense to me when I first started reading, it took me almost 8 months to a year to receive knowledge and wisdom from the Holy Spirit. So please don’t worry if you are slow to understand passages. I used the initial bible study days to memorise scriptures to slowly get into God’s word.

Don’t give up.

God is the only one who can help you and save you from whatever you are facing. He is a friend that never fails, a loving Father that comforts and a Mighty God who deserves all the praise and glory.
