One of the most valuable lessons we learn as children is to give to other in need.
But as we grow older in life, and financial responsibilities settle in, we seem to want more than what we need to save for the rainy days. This is a fair thought to save money. But our God is a God who gives abundantly and rewards obedience.
“Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.” Luke 6:38 (NKJV)
There are multiple bible verses about giving to the poor and needy, which demonstrates the heart of God.
The Holy Spirit Guides Us
The Holy Spirit is the third person in the Holy Trinity, which is God the Father, God the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit (Mathew 28:19).
Sometimes our material desires can get in the way of giving to God’s people.
When I was doing my bible study, I reached Joshua 6. If you haven’t heard about this, it is the story about the disobedience of Achan, the Israelite.
Here’s a quick background.
The Israelites had just defeated Jericho through the Mighty hand of God, and from their victory, had accumulated all the gold and silver and other precious metals from the Land of Jericho.
Joshua had instructed them not to take these devoted items for themselves, but that it must go into the treasury of God. Failing to do so will bring about destruction.
All the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron are sacred to the Lord and must go into his treasury. Joshua 6:19
Because Achan refused to take heed to this instruction, and saved up these treasures secretly for himself, the next war the Israelites marched towards (which was to Ai) led them to defeat.
This was one of the first defeats in a long time for Israel, and it was because of the wrath of God for their sin (even if it was just one man’s fault).
God was angry about Achan’s sin that it affected the entire nation of Israel, and finally Achan was put to death and the nation of Israel was restored back, with God blessings.
While this may seem like a harsh penalty, reading the entire Chapter will give you a better picture of the situation.
The reason this resonated with me was because God is a compassionate Father, and giving to those in need is like giving to the Kingdom of God.
I believe the money we make, the success we see, the material possessions we own, are all given to us by the grace of God.
If His Mighty hand wasn’t on my life today, I wouldn’t be where I am. So instead of simply reading the bible, I learnt that I need to act on things that I am called to do.
The one and only way to know if it truly is the Holy Spirit guiding you, is by reading the bible and praying.
When I first started reading the bible, I didn’t think of it as something that was going to give me a new revelation.
I thought the bible would just teach us to be kind, loving, sharing and caring. And that we need to do good works to enter the kingdom of God. It is now that I realise that I had it all wrong.
Jesus does not teach us a system or work-based religion.
If you have never read the bible in great depths, I would urge you to start reading.
The bible never made sense to me when I first started reading, it took me almost 8 months to a year to receive knowledge and wisdom from the Holy Spirit. Don’t worry if you are slow to understand passages. I used the initial bible study days to memorise scriptures to slowly get into God’s word.
Don’t give up.
God is the only one who can help you and save you from whatever you are facing. He is a friend that never fails, a loving Father that comforts and a Mighty God who deserves all the praise and glory.
