Unique Things Jesus Said About Himself that No One Else Did

While the deity of Jesus is often questioned, we see from the Bible that Jesus claimed things about Himself that only God could say.

In the Bible, Jesus is called a Prophet (Mark 6:15), a High Priest (Hebrews 4:14), the Son of God (Matthew 8:29), the Son of Man (Mark 14:62) and as being One with God the Father (John 10:30). These are just a few of the many titles of Jesus.

Since He made these claims, it is not fair to call Him only a prophet while ignoring the rest of what He said about Himself.

For example, Jesus also calls Himself the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End (Revelation 1:17-18) – a title only used for God.

A Key Fact that is Often Missed Out about Jesus

Though Jesus was Holy, He had both a human nature and a divine nature.

The divine nature allowed Him to be Holy.

The human nature caused Him to have limitation as a humans do.

Paul writes,

Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. Philippians 2:5-7

➡ This shows us that Jesus had limitations here on earth, which is why He asked the Father to glorify Him towards the end of His mission here on earth.

And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed. John 17:5

➡ John 17, also proves to us that Jesus pre-existed even before the creation of the world!

So when we read passages that say the Father is greater than I (John 14:28), it may seem like Jesus is not as divine as the Father, leading to misinterpretation of this passage. Because, if you go back a few verses in John 14:12, Jesus tells His disciples:

Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.

Jesus is often seen talking in parables and figures of speech, and tells them that more understanding will be given to those who are ready to receive.

Unique Things Jesus Said About Himself (ESV translation)

Let us take a look at some unique things Jesus said about Himself, that only God claimed.

1. I Am the First and the Last

Jesus calls Himself the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End, in many instances in the book of Revelation.

God says,

Who has performed and done this, calling the generations from the beginning? I, the Lord, the first, and with the last; I am he. Isaiah 41:4

Jesus says,

When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, “Fear not, I am the first and the last, and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades. Revelation 1:17-18

2. Jesus Existed before all Creation

Jesus said,

Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world. John 17:24

3. Authority to Forgive Sins

Only God has the authority to forgive our sins, yet Jesus was able to forgive people of their sins. Even when the woman caught in adultery was standing before Jesus, He did not condemn her but forgave her of her sins.

God says,

“I, I am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins.” Isaiah 43:25

Jesus says,

And behold, some people brought to him a paralytic, lying on a bed. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven.” Matthew 9:2

4. I Am the Only Way to the Father

Jesus explicitly declares He is the only way to God the Father.

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.“ John 14:6

5. Jesus came from the Father

Only Jesus has said that He has come from God the Father, and going back to the Father.

I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father. John 16:28

6. Jesus has all Authority both in Heaven and Earth

Jesus declares He has all the authority in heaven and on earth. Jesus was able to walk on water, cast out demons, heal the sick, calm the storm, foretell the future, know what is in the hearts of men. Angels were under His submission (Hebrews 1:6; Matthew 26:52-54).

Not only was He able to raise the dead, He was also able to raise Himself and be resurrected – something no prophet could ever do.

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Matthew 28:18

7. Believe in Me

Deuteronomy 6:4 says, “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one”. Yet, Jesus puts Himself to the same equation as God the Father in relation to His nature. This is why the question of the Holy Trinity comes in.

Isaiah 42:8 says, I am the Lord, that is my name; my glory I give to no other. nor my praise to carved idols.

Yet, Jesus tells us to believe in God and also in Him.

Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. John 14:1

8. Pray in My Name

If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it. John 14:14

Here Jesus teaches us how to pray. Jesus teaches us that we are to pray in His name while making our requests known to God the Father. That is why even in the Lord’s prayer, we start by saying Our Father, and end it in Jesus name.

9. Eternal life to all who believe in Him

In Matthew 7:13-14, Jesus explains to us that there are only two ways.

The narrow way that is hard but leads to eternal life and only a few find it.

The wide way that is easy but leads to destruction and many enter it.

This narrow way is not a physical structure, but a person and it’s Jesus. In John 14:6, Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

10. Jesus is seated on the Throne of God

When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Matthew 25:31

11. Thomas calls Jesus God

Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed. John 20:28-29

12. Jesus was Worshipped, even as a baby

And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. Matthew 2:11

13. Source of all peace

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. John 14:27

14. His spoke with authority not under authority

And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes. Matthew 7:28-29

15. Jesus was able to lay down His own life and raise it up Himself

No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father. John 10:18.

16. Fortell His Own Death

For he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, “The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him. And when he is killed, after three days he will rise.” Mark 9:31

Jesus Created Everything in Heaven and on Earth

For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. Colossians 1:16

The Father Calls His Son, God

But of the Son he says,

“Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom.” Hebrews 1:8

Jesus Could Not Be Tempted

Although the devil tried to tempt Jesus in the wilderness (in Matthew 4:1-11), he failed miserably. Jesus used scriptures against the enemy and was able to resist him.

James 1:13 tells us,

Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one.
