When you confidently rely on Jesus and the Heavenly Father to carry you through your time of trials without giving in to fear, you choose faith over fear.

Here is a good example.

When my daughter started learning to ride a bike, she began with training wheels on.

It was fun and easy for her to ride with support. But when the training wheels were off, she had to put some extra effort to make it work.

She almost wanted to give up after trying hard for a couple of days, but this time I told her to focus on me when she was riding. I stood a couple of meters in front of her and asked her to ride to me, looking straight at me.

With her eyes glued on me and nothing to distract her, she finally did it after a few tries.

Just as children have faith in their parents to help overcome fear, we also need to choose faith over fear and trust God with our troubles.

When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. Psalm 56:3

What does Faith Over Fear Mean?

Fear is nothing but an emotion we feel.

An emotion that something bad might happen.

Fear is a “maybe“, “could be” situation. Not a “will be”, “should be” stituation.

So instead of being afraid of something that may or may not happen, we can divert that energy of fear, into prayer.

Praying for God to guide us through the storm and help us face it. We live in a world that is full of challenges and not trouble-free.

But, if God is for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8:31)

Faith over fear simply means fighting fear with the faith in Jesus. Knowing that He is with you through your storm.

God is Good

Our God is a good God, and we must remember that all things good come from God.

But we must also remember that just like there is a Holy Spirit, there is also the devil.

1 Peter 5:8, Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

His plan is to destroy God plan, and establish his plans.

But there is a way to fight the devil, and it is with the word of God.

Studying the word of God, will help us build our trust in the Lord, and give us the ability to walk boldly in faith.

Ephesians 6:11, Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.

Choosing Faith Over Fear

I love reading the journey of Peter in the bible and how Jesus showed him how to overcome fear with faith.

So, let us take a look at how Peters faith was being tested in the bible.

Peter travelled along with Jesus Christ and saw Him perform His first miracle of turning water into wine at the wedding feast in Cana, Galilee.

John 2:7-9 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.

Though Peter listened to Jesus’ uplifting, reassuring messages and saw miracles happen. Yet, he returned to his fishing business due to a lack of faith.

He doubted God’s ability to provide for his physical needs.

What does faith over fear mean?

Faith Over Fear Yields Abundance

If you have a bible with you, you can turn to Luke Chapter 5. It is one of the best examples of Peter and his faith in Jesus.

Peter and other fishermen had worked all night but were unable to catch any fish. So they returned their boats to the shore and were washing their nets.

Jesus who was by the lake got into Peters boats and was teaching to the crowds from the boat.

When He had finished teaching, He asked Peter to put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch. ~ Luke 5:4 (NIV)

Simon (Peter) answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” Luke 5:5 (NIV)

Obeying Jesus they let down the nets. And to their surprise, they gathered so much fish that their nets began to break with the weight of their catch.

When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man.” For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken. Luke 5:8-9

Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.” So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him. Luke 5:10-11

Not only did Jesus supply Peter with the fish for him to support his family, as a fisherman. But He also made him a disciple, to follow Jesus and spread His word to the people.

Just like Peter, it is important for us to put our trust in the Lord amidst fear.

It could be a fear of losing your job that’s troubling you. But by putting your trust in Him, He will show you a way you never imagined. And will multiply your blessings.

I am a living testimony of this.

During a time when I had to choose between a career I was no longer interested in pursuing and being a stay-at-home mom, God showed me an alternate route.

While I chose to be a stay-at-home parent, I wanted a way to contribute financially to my family.

And God showed me how. One that allows me to be with my family and provide for them financially.

I give thanks to the Lord everyday for the path He has given me, and taken me on a journey I never imagined.

Prayer to Overcome Fear

Heavenly Father, I pray with anyone reading this today, that they cast all their fears on You and be free of their anxiety. Father God, we thank You for all the blessings in our lives and pray that you enter our hearts and minds to free us of the fear that is holding us back. Break the plans of the devil, and establish Your plans in our lives in Jesus name we pray. Amen.

Faith Over Fear: Jesus Walks on Water

Another instance when Peter’s faith is tested is in Matthew Chapter 14.

Jesus had His disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him, while He went up to the mountain to pray alone.

The boat had already gone a long way from the land but was battered by the waves as the wind was against them. (Matthew 14:24)

It was at this time that the disciples on the boat, saw Jesus walking on the sea coming towards them.

John 14:26-27 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

Peter seeing this said to Jesus, if it is You, let me walk on the water just like You.

And Jesus said come. So Peter stepped out of the boat and started walking towards Jesus. While he was staying focussed on Jesus he was able to walk on water. But the second he started to fear the wind and lost focus on Jesus, he began to sink.

Matthew 14:31-33 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

This is such a powerful verse about faith in the bible.

Every time my faith decreases I always remember Peter sinking into the sea, the minute he took his eyes of Jesus.

No one wants to hear Jesus telling us “You of little faith”.

So every time I lose hope in the Lord, I turn to scriptures to renew my faith in God and to defeat fear before it takes control over my life.

Fear Causes Doubt, Faith Gives You Strength

Fear produces doubt, which is the cost of Peter’s sinking.

Fears and doubts can be destructive forces that undermine your faith. Giving into fear and doubt can cause us to drown spiritually.

Unlike Peter, always focus on Christ Jesus, who can strengthen your faith to overcome doubt and fear.

Never feed your fears and doubts by dwelling on them. Instead, focus on what Jesus Christ and His father do and will do for you.
