Oh give thanks to the Lord, call upon His name, make known His deeds among peoples! Psalm 105:1 (ESV)

Psalm 105, is a powerful reminder of God’s blessings on His people, who are obedient to Him, and are ready to follow Him even in the midst of hardship.

God is often testing, preparing and refining His people.

The best examples of blessings through obedience are seen in Abraham and Joseph who are also mentioned in Psalm 105.

Both of these mighty men of God, persevered through difficulty and were rewarded accordingly.

They had strong faith in God and lived righteously, regardless of what they faced.

When we seek God wholeheartedly in humility and obedience, He restores abundance upon us according to His will.

Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto to you. Matthew 6:33 (KJV)

When we seek the Lord proclaiming His name, we find strength in His word. And it is through His presence that we get the ability and courage to overcome anything. Without Him we can do nothing (John 15:5) and this is resonated in verses 3 and 4 of Psalm 105.

Psalm 105

God Reminds Us of the Written Word

As we begin to read Psalm 105, it comes as a quick recap of some of the powerful stores and verses of the Old Testament.

Remember the wonders He has done, His miracles, and the judgments He pronounced. Psalm 105:5

We are reminded to equip ourselves with God’s Word, which is what Jesus also did, to show us an example of the importance of scripture.

Three times Jesus defeated Satan with the written word of God, how much more are we to study and live by it? It is one of the most powerful living tool to help us navigate this life on earth. By looking back at scriptures, we are reminded of God’s majestic power and love through His miracles and marvellous works.

No matter what we are faced with in life, God gives us the strength to walk through the storm, by guiding us through the Holy Spirit. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil. Psalm 23:4 (ESV).

The scriptures remind us about our miracle working God who has the power to cast judgement on all those who stand against Him.

While God is loving and gentle, we often miss the part where He is Sovereign and Almighty.

The God Who Provides

He allowed no one to oppress them; for their sake he rebuked kings: “Do not touch my anointed ones; do my prophets no harm.” Psalm 105:14-15

God is always faithful to His promises. Although we may be unfaithful to Him, He remains faithful in guiding us into obedience to live a life pleasing to Him.

We see this in the lives of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph and Moses in the Old Testament.

Men failed God, but God never failed man.

In fact, He protects and provides for His people. When the people of Israel were in the wilderness, He provided them with manna from heaven for food and water from a stone.

He was also the cloud by day to cover and protect them, and the fire by night to give them light (Exodus 13:21).

Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people. (Exodus 13:22). ➡ this is how faithful God is! He never left His people even in the wilderness.

He spread out a cloud as a covering, and a fire to give light at night. They asked, and he brought them quail; he fed them well with the bread of heaven. He opened the rock, and water gushed out; it flowed like a river in the desert. Psalm 105:39-41

God’s timing is unlike anything we can imagine.

God stopped the Manna when they Reached the Promised Land

God provided the Israelites with manna from Heaven the entire length of the stay in the wilderness.

But God, in His perfect timing stop providing the manna the day the ate food from the Promised Land.

The manna stopped the day after they ate this food from the land; there was no longer any manna for the Israelites, but that year they ate the produce of Canaan. Joshua 5:12

Days of Testing

Just like the trials in the days of Moses and Joseph, we too go through seasons of wilderness, where things may look stagnant and even worse than expected, but it could just be that God is testing our faith (Psalm 105:19).

Similarly with Joseph, first old into slavery by his brothers, then falsely accused and put into prison, yet he remained a righteous and faithful to God.

God had a future plan for Joseph that was only revealed to him after he endured hardship.

Once out of prison, God gave him the ability to interpret dreams, using him to save a nation from famine.

When he summoned a famine on the land and broke all supply of bread, he had sent a man ahead of them, Joseph, who was sold as a slave. Psalm 105:16-17 (ESV)

Notice how this verse says, “God sent a man ahead of them”. Josephs wilderness in prison allowed him to learn patience and obedience to God, whom God later used to save people from famine.

What we see during difficult times, is the difficulty, but God sees beyond that. He sees the results of enduring that hardship and the maturity that we gain as Christians during the course of the journey.

Job also went through terrible hardship before God restored and doubled what he had lost.

After Job had prayed for his friends, the Lord restored his fortunes and gave him twice as much as he had before.  Job 42:10

Time to Rejoice

Finally it’s the time to rejoice.

Psalm 105, ends with these bible verses:

He brought out his people with rejoicing, his chosen ones with shouts of joy; he gave them the lands of the nations, and they fell heir to what others had toiled for that they might keep his precepts and observe his laws. Psalm 105:43-45

Three things we see God expect from us, that is seen throughout the Old and New Testament:

  1. Practice Humility
  2. Walk in Obedience
  3. Refrain from Idolatry

The combination of humility and discipline in itself causes us to turn away from sin. The majority of the verses where the wrath of God was revealed was due to disobedience and idol worship. Studying the bible will give us a clear picture of God’s will allowing us to walk in His ways.

It is through humility and obedience that God reveals more to His people, allowing us to be blessed and prosperous. Also, making sure we don’t fall back into our old ways of living, but continue to do what pleases and glorifies His name.

This is the powerful message behind Psalm 105.
